Hi guys, just wondering if it would look ok to put old mine cut diamonds and sapphire into a modern setting? They are in an antique gold ring right now, but I only wear white gold and really want to change the look. I will post a pic eventually (new PC system and camera, ugh).

It would be a half carat diamond on each side of a one carat sapphire...sort of Bostonian look. My jeweler thinks it's crazy. But, I have really negative associations with the ring as it is right now, and was hoping to enjoy it "in a new light" because the stones themselves are beautiful.

What do you think? Anyone else ever do this?

Also, this is my first post (newbie!) so if it's redundant, please let me know and redirect to former post. Thanks!:smile1:

If you have negative associations with the ring, change it! You'll remember the fun creation process more.

Post some pictures of some settings you've been looking into and the stones.

If your jeweler isn't willing to do what you're asking for any other reasons than structural, find a different one.

As for the setting...it can definitely be done well, it all depends on the setting.

These are old stones in a new setting in my engagement ring. My MIL gave me the original ring which was similar but yellow gold and with a 4claw setting. On the first day I wore it, I knocked a stone and it fell out!! Thank goodness I was in the car so was able to find the stone! Resetting it was a no brainer after that!!

Ok, so just have to add that the "auto link" to some weird ring on e-Bay was not added by me, and does not represent the ring I have! Yikes!

This is exactly what I have in mind, but with a center sapphire. It looks absolutely beautiful!! There doesn't seem to be a conflict of old and new styles in any way! I love that you found the diamond, Fommom.

I will post pics as soon as I can get my new PC and camera to talk to each other.

The good thing is, the stones can be taken out carefully without any damage to the ring proper...only the prongs will be pulled up a little. They needed to be remade and tipped anyway, so I can archive the setting, or re-use it.

The sapphire does need to be re-polished, and maybe re-cut because the surface scuffing is so deep. It needs to be taken out of the setting to do this anyway. So maybe this is all to the good.
I'll post pics when I get it done!

P.S. NWGal...great avatar...has to be one of favorite moments.

I love both the old setting and the new, but I totally appreciate that the Victorian setting isn't for everyone. It's a very "in your face" type style, with as much focus put on the gold as on the stones. The white gold setting is beautiful and I believe that jewellery is to be worn and enjoyed so go for what is right for you!! I adore antique -usually high Victorian silver jewellery and have quite a few pieces. I wear all that I have-and I teach 4&5 year olds! I want my own kids to have memories of me wearing it and I love it when my school kids ask about what I'm wearing!! The older kids in the school especially love the mourning jewellery!!! "Show me the dead mans hair" is a particularly favourite request!!!
