Guilty! But necessary! Often restaurant tables in New York City are too small for a bag; this includes lunch places but also nice dinner restaurants. I would never hang a bag on the back of my chair only to have it “walk” while I’m engrossed in conversation, and my lap only works for small bags, so very often I have to place the bag on the floor with my feet clasping it lightly. Same thing in too small, poorly designed or badly maintained restrooms where there are no hooks. Sometimes I give the bottom a good wipe-down with a damp paper towel after hand washing. Also when descending into the subway, I keep my bag on the inside (right) and it hits into the wall and slides on the handrail as I go down several flights. I often carry food items from home during the day and water is a must. I’m on foot and my bag is my back seat or trunk. I have about 40 bags in a range of designer and contemporary. I keep them rotating and they all have gotten this same treatment except the few light colored ones where I make a special effort to keep the bag on my lap while eating, awkward though it can be. All the above is pre-covid of course ... but on top of all that, now I see myself sanitizing my bag several times a day when I finally get to return to some form of real life.
