I've never been a fan of princess or emerald cut diamonds. They never really appealed to me. I don't like the square shape of princess and emerald cuts don't sparkle (they glitter, but it's not 'wow'). But recently saw something that DID catch my eye!:heart:

In Bailey Banks & Biddle the other week, I discovered a new kind of diamond cut, called the "Prince Cut". It's similar to emerald cut, but it has 111 facets instead of 46 the emerald cut has. The ring that I found in the showcase was gorgeous and sparkled like crazy. It's pictured below:

The stats on the ring: 1.9 GIA certified center stone that was a completely eye clean SI1, F color (read: white and sparkly!). It was flanked by two half carat stones of the same cut, set in platinum. They were asking $17,800 on sale (not unreasonable for a retail store). It gave some great finger coverage, I can tell you that. :okay:

The patent for the cut was obtained in 2000, but this is the first time I've seen or heard of it. It's really unique and beautiful in real life. Has anyone else heard of this cut before or own it?

I had never heard of this cut before, and if I had seem it I may have just dismissed it as an emerald cut.

The ring you posted is gorgeous and does sound like a great deal for a retailer like BB&B.

I have seen that cut in magazine ads and it is called "The Tycoon Cut" and yes, it is
quite beautiful.
I think the jeweler was J.B. Starr but not sure.

I'm always a little wary of diamonds that have that many more facets... 111 compared to 46? I'm curious if that's their attempt to hide something inherently wrong with inferior stones? I don't know enough about jewelry so I could be wrong.

Sometimes inclusions can be sort of "lost" in the faceting. Emerald cut stones often need to be a higher clarity because with so few facets, flaws can be much more apparent than they would be in a stone with more facets.

I think they probably did this cut more because many people love the rectangular shape of the emerald cut, but they like the sparkle of more faceted cuts - round, princess, etc. Emerald cut stones flash color more than they sparkle.

This is a very pretty ring. But I still love my emerald cut engagement ring! I do like sparkle though, so my wedding band has lots of round diamonds - they sparkle and my ering flashes!

Oh my that is gorgeous! I agree with your thoughts on emeralds not sparkling as much as other cuts. Sounds like a good price too, I saw a ring at Costco for more $$$ this past weekend!

Very unusual facets... is there a line diagram of the facets? The prince cut reminds me of tapered baguettes the way it appears to run vertically in the stones.
