Price per wear

Funny, I've always used the cost per wear for everything: clothes, shoes, perfume, DVDS, CDS, cars, subscriptions... For bags my threshold is 3 Euro, for SLGs it is 50 cents.

When you lay it out, actually a very practical way of looking at it. Anyways, yes my current bag is under that amount, then again i have been wearing it straight since i bought it.. also reassures me my price point that i feel comfortable with is getting me good value for my outlay.

As well concludes if i were to go up(cost) i would need to wear the item much more to justify the price point.

Off to read the article.

Interesting! I'm at around $700 and $500 per wear on my last two bags purchased, a Chanel medium classic and the Parabellum Archer tote. I buy bags for life though so I might yet reach that $6 per use. :3

I seem to be in the $30 range for a majority of my premium designer bags. My Chanel has the highest cpw at $53, and my Speedy B at the lowest at $11.57.

My Longchamps are well under the $6 cpw, and my ZCP, card case, cles, are all at $0 cpw as I carry these daily.

I really like this concept and was explaining it to my husband this weekend as I told him that I may purchase an expensive bag or SLG, but it will be my only one in that "category" and make the cost per wear minimal over time. I should note that it's also easier for me to make this argument since I only purchase black or beige handbags now so it severely restricts the number of bags that I own per category (larger totes, classic handbags, crossbody bags, clutches). I also only own only one type of each SLG (wallet, key pouch, key holder, etc).

I used the example of my Speedy. It is my only brown handbag (except for a brown tote which serves an entirely different function). This will be my only brown handbag. My Speedy, since it was my first designer bag and I carried it to death when I first got it, is down to $1 cost per wear. My Zippy wallet and key pouch are down to $0.

Thinking about this though makes me feel better about my recent thoughts on getting a new wallet. My almost 10 year old Zippy has seen better days and deserves a break. Since the cost per wear is so low, it's a justifiable purchase for me.

I calculate it this way: amount of bags I have-add price ( paid not msrp)for all of them together, divide this number by the years I wear the bags starting with the oldest, then divide by 365 days. Since I don't buy expensive bags, I am usually at 1$ per day. I buy good leather bags but with deep discounts. I calculate price per day because I use some kind of bag everyday, same as per wear.
Need to say that my collection is pretty new and has no gaps, I haven't got rid off any bags yet.

Another way to think about this- I purchased a pre loved Speedy 30 DE, used it a fair amount and sold it 2 years later for a net loss of $50 (including eBay fees). I know I used it well over 50 days, so my net cost was less than a $1 for sure. If you factor in resale your price per use could go way down.

Good point, I never considered that

If I factor this in (cost per wear) for my entire closet, I will be sorely disappointed! Many a formal dress, dress shoe, suit, etc. sitting in bags and boxes, only to see the light of day when I'm at a wedding or holiday party. Not to mention a clutch or fancier purse, jewelry pieces like pearl strands or large sparkly earrings, the list can go on. Don't get me wrong, it's a great way to justify large purchases, but if I go down that road for my purchases I won't be too happy with some.

Never calculated this.
Never will.

Wtf does "wear" entail?
Using 2 hours or more? Touching with bare hands in a boat? If lipstick matches both shoes & bag in restaurant?
If bag can be used 4 times before reselling on ebay?

Holy crap.
Life's confusing enough for those of us with small brains.
Why ask me to build a daring financial scheme around stuff holding my tissues & keys? :D

That's why I never spend $1K on a bag, since I don't know if it'll be worn often enough for the price to be justified. I do have a fair sized collection, so a number of them are still waiting to be used; that said, I did look at a few of the not-so-new ones, and the cost per wear is like $20 or $25.

Hm. I'm really bad with numbers. They make my head dizzy. Also, I'm way too lazy to create excel sheets to keep track on how often I wear my bags. So no, I don't calculate cost per wear. :smile1:
