Judt recently , my dh brought me to a jewelry store to buy a ring for our anniversary. I wanted at first to get a sapphire ring with baguettes on the side. Then the sales lady talked me into getting a diamond ring since i never had one..ever. It was preowned and way over our budget too but it was beautiful. I chose it over my original choice. My dh told me as soon as we are home, that we are getting someones used engagement ring and thus probably got divorced or something and may not be a lucky ring. I told him, no probably someone had to upgrade her ring thus selling it. I bought from mappins a canadian jewelry store found in every mall here. What are your thoughts on buying preowned engagement ring? Thanks

If you love this ring I hope that you will enjoy it and not worry about the circumstances....
it's YOURS now.

There's an old Eastern European way to get rid of bad juju. Turn around 3 times and spit. Try that if you have any doubts, give the ring a thorough cleaning and remember, whatever its past, the ring is a gift to you, given with love. There's no way anything negative could be associated with it.

Many congrats on your anniversary.

I just did this..hope it works lol

The ring has a history, I'm sure, but I view it like adopting a shelter pet: the first home may not have worked out, but now it gets to shine in a great home with a happy marriage. YOU are the good mojo.

I bought my wedding dress on consignment (the previous bride had "changed her mind"). I feel like the dress may have seen some disappointment before, but it got a new chance with me and I got a deal in the process. That ring is lucky to have you!

personally, I wouldn't do it because I find pieces that are pre-owned are usually not that much less expensive than buying new, especially here in Canada.

Did you get a certificate with your purchase that states the colour, clarity, carat weight? Was the stone previously certified with GIA or another gemological institute? Is there any damage to the stone or something of that sort? What is their return policy? Does the same policy apply to this ring because it was pre-owned? What is the warranty on the ring?

There wasnt any certificate given..she did compare it with another ring and i found it way better than the new one..there wasnt any damage at all. But yes, they did offer to replace the stone if any damage. There was a warranty provided...it was beautiful. I actually love it. I didnt realized its preowned until she told me after I said its beautiful..the SA was really nice and helpful

Did she tell you anything about the colour or the clarity? Depending on how much you paid for the ring, you may have really been taken for a ride price-wise.

She did....she even let me use this loop thing to look at the diamonds...she told me the clarity, carat and color...i was new in buying diamond ring so i didnt mind whatever shes saying as long as it sparkles well and its authentic diamond..i think its a reputable jewelry store inside the mall so i really trusted them....i didnt buy the diamond as investment purpose but for personal one...

My diamond isn't as expensive as whats been posted here lots of time...so its understandable I'm embarrassed to even say what she told me...i thought it is a beautiful ring and my dh gave it to me..so the worth is in the sentimental reason...

The only reason I ask is because I work in a jewellery store and have a lot of experience and knowledge about pre-owned jewellery and diamonds, I just don't want for you to have been ripped off that's all :) Don't be embarrassed either! As long as you are truly in love with it then even if it was more expensive or something like that, it's worth the price :)

Thank you. I appreciate it though :-) iwish i researched further before purchasing.. I was worried my husband will change his mind if i didn't get it at that time...lol

I would buy pre-owned jewelry from a reputable source, and would not care if it was lucky or not. Since you love it and felt that it was a good deal, that's all that matters. Depending on the stone size and amount spent, I would ask the store for some type of certificate or statement stating the color, clarity, cut, and carat, and would consider getting it appraised elsewhere for piece of mind.
