Hi all. I have had this terrible smell coming from inside of my pochette Metis (produced in 2018) since I purchased it years ago. It got so bad that anything I put in it absorbed the smell. I took it into the LV store in 2022, and they re-lined it, was going to charge me, but I noticed the smell was still there. Anyway, they didn't charge me after I brought that up...

The bag still smells so I decided to do some research about it. I saw that the PMs, produced in 2018, are defective due to some glue that was being used. People have brought theirs into the store and were able to get a 1 to 1 exchange. Does anyone know how they determine which of the PMs were in the defective batch?

Also, I've just noticed this on the bottom of my bag. Does anyone know what this is? It looks as if the top glaze on the canvas has rubbed/melted off? I'm surprised it's there because I baby my bags and use them infrequently.

TIA!

Yes it is the top coating layer peeling off. Almost always happens when something spills on the canvas that can react with the PVC. Hand cream, sunscreen... things like that, or our hands have something on and we hold the bag over and over again until the peel starts to develop.
If we just put it on a table that was not clean of such a solution, it can damage the PVC as well.

The glue issue is rare, but happened to people. I hope they'll decide to exchange it for you.

I bought my monogram clemence wallet in the boutique on Rue St. Honore in 2018 while I was on vacation. It stinks to high heavens. I’m meticulous on how I keep my wallets. Thank you for posting this even though it’s another type of item. I thought I was the only one. I don’t carry it anymore because I never could permanently get rid of the smell.

I’m following this as I just bought a pre loved 2018 pochette Metis in January. It had a strong smell (like lavender perhaps) but I kept it as the price was good. It’s been in a bag with coffee grounds since then and the smell has improved a lot. @ssicaa please update if you take it to store. I might not have a solution as I have no receipt and not the original owner.

I have a special edition Metis like one in pic ( not my photo), which has hardly been used, always in dust bag and it stinks! So annoying as none of my other items smell like this.

I have 3 canvas cles that smell horrible, too! DA, DE, and Mono. I have tried cleaning them with a wet wipe, putting silica packs inside, and putting them in a baggie with baking soda & nothing has gotten rid of the smell. It’s super disappointing.

I had a zippy coin purse that smell horrible too, which I also tried to clean. The smell would be fainter, but never went away. I asked LV and they suggested it was because I cleaned it and it didn't completely dry.

I had no idea that other people had smell issues with their bags/SLGs until a few days ago. These stories sound so familiar. My canvas bags are fine and so is my epi bag and my husband’s epi card holder. It’s just my wallet. I now carry a Patricia Nash wallet I got at an airport and is slimmer, a little shorter than my Clemence. It holds just as much and is not zip around. The quality is great and I swear I only paid $90 for it. The best part is that it doesn’t stink like my Clemence!

I bought a zippy coin in 2020 and it smelled so bad, like dirty cow. I never used it because of the smell and could never sell or regifted because of that. This month while I was out of town, I went to a Louis Vuitton store brought the wallet in the box with the receipt and asked if there was anything they can do about this and when they smelled it, they said we will let you pick out a new wallet. I’m lucky the manager was nice and recognized the issue because it’s a five-year-old wallet but clearly never used. I did mention to them that I had looked this up and in Korea there was a lawsuit about smelly adhesive and there was a massive recall from 2017 to 2021. I believe can’t remember the years exactly they said they don’t know anything about that. But that I can have a new wallet I asked instead of a new wallet if I could use the money towards an item that I wanted to buy and they said yes I got very lucky.

Wow! You did get lucky! My stinkpot was from that window of time as well (2018). Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m just curious as to why this is the first thread I’ve seen about this? Are people embarrassed or are do many people selling their items before they stink?

That was lucky!
I brought my PM into the store today. They also said they didn’t know anything about the recall. I sent it out again to be inspected due to the smell. The SAs were kind of cold (maybe because I don’t have an extensive purchase history?). I really hope something is done about the smell. I don’t want to keep relining it when the smell gets unbearable.

I honestly feel like they gaslight you into thinking it’s not a manufacturing flaw… that it’s somehow the customer’s fault. But with so many people complaining of the same thing (rotten egg smell) with the same bags from a specific time period, it can’t be just coincidence…

Interesting. My zippy was from 2021.
