I saw a clip on CNN this morning making fun of Balenciaga’s new bags – noting the similarity of one in particular to the iconic 99 cent IKEA blue tote. Here is a related article.

lol.. I don't think I've seen those here (yet.)
Apparently I'm very fashionable as I own those ikea "totes" in the large and mini size.. lol..
I use them as laundry bags.. haha..

Good for them since Gvasalia's been getting some fashion flak here as well lately  I've just waited for an opportunity to post this:

For those with really fancy horses the Bal Carry Shopper should give just the perfect touch of glam at feeding time  (pic taken from Scandinavian dressage rider Lina Dolk http://liinadolk.blogg.se/2012/may/ikea.html ).

our local news program did a story about it too, today. they were making fun of the bags and saying that IKEA was very flattered. i was rather surprised they talked about Bal for an almost 10 minute segment, mostly laughing at them:lol:

Seems it was a smart and strategic decision, they got massive pr and free ads all over the world ....

Love the way IKEA deals with this :p to its advantage of course.

The duvet-carrier bag is a bit too much for me. I tried on the small size in the orange pattern yesterday and I have to say, respect for putting that out there and expecting it to sell... I thought some of the Vetements stuff (the DHL t-shirt comes to mind) are a bit of a piss off, a kind of let's test how far fashion idiots are prepared to go. And also nothing new for anyone who had lived through the CdG and MM times.

But I think what Gvasilia is doing with bags at Balenciaga is extremely interesting and also profoundly traditional. It is like going to the bottom of what all this bag thing is about. In fact, all handbags are inspired by utilitarian carriers. Only one century ago no self-respecting lady would carry a bag other than something like a velvet pouch or a pearl-incrusted minaudiere. Servants carried bags for them. Other people carried bags as tools: doctors carried bostons, and sheppards carried satchels, and sailors bucket bags. Law class lawyers would carry briefcases, farmers carried hobos and their wifes went to market carrying baskets in the shape of totes. To me is not only perfectly legitimate that a designer would find inspiration in utilitarian bags which are perfectly fit for purpose (the IKEA bag IS a great design) and thinks of how to adapt them. It is also what bag design is about in its very essence.

Very interesting bit of bag history :flowers:

And for once, it's IKEA's turn to have somebody be "inspired" by them :p

I have this love/hate relationship with IKEA. I like them for making it possible for almost anyone to have a contemporary home environment, their kid friendly furniture (as in a price range that doesn't make you cry if you have to replace something  ). But I hate them for making, for an example of many, a lamp that was so much a copy of the original that I have, that I once was asked if it was from IKEA :whut:  (laughing at my reaction when this happened).

I just think that with all the money and talent at IKEA's disposal, they have the opportunity to make their own original designs, which when they do, can be brilliant.

Fashion week!
Har har

That's just one too freakish for words encounter between "Gvasalia's knack for applying social observation and the inspiration of ordinary everyday objects to his design" (Vogue http://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/pre-fall-2017/balenciaga ) and random guy somewhere in Asia deciding to pick his nose at just the right moment. The universe of fashion moves in, like, really mysterious ways, guys!
