I have a stainless steel ebel beluga with diamond markers that I LOVE!
I also have a cartier demoiselle that is stainless steel and an omega but that is two tone with the different colored stones as markers. Omega has some fantastic looking stainless steel versions too though!

I like Tiffany watches as well and some Hermes watches. I have a Hermes Medor watch, which is probably too edgy but nonetheless I wear it to work. I really like the Cape Cod watch. I couldn't believe how many NYC attorneys wore Cartier when I went to a CLE for new attorneys up there! I swear I saw at least 3 Cartier ballon watches in a class with under 50 people. Personally I don't like Modavo watches. Another option might be a Michelle with diamond. I don't think you have to be that conservative in your watch choice.

Consider the type of watch you really love, because you're going to have it along time. Don't be afraid of Amazon, I have purchased watches from them before. Usually, the warranty is good for two years, which is what it would be from the manufacturer. The Ebel is great as is Raymond Weill. Look, I know it's not a Rolex, but still a great watch. Raymond Weill has some lovely classic pieces within your budget that are Swiss Made. I have never heard of anyone having problems with their RW watches, but not the case for Rolex and Cartier. Longines also makes some lovely pieces. Now also we are entering the era of understated. I would save the Rolly for when you make partner---unless you really come into some serious cash. just my opinion. Good luck.

I totally agree--I think a Rolex would sent the wrong message in this economic environment. Funny story: my fiance was paying his bills, and I noticed one for an insurance agency. When I asked him what he was insuring for $70/year, he looked really embarrassed and shyly said, "I have a Rolex that my dad bought for college graduation."

We have been dating SIX years and I have never seen this watch! (DF is a t-shirt and jeans type of guy.) He says he keeps it UNDER HIS BED... But I guess if I ever want to wear a Rollie, I know where to find one!

Thanks for all the advice! I think I am going to go with an Ebel from the Watchery, since my parents are also paying for my wedding next year. Cartiers seem a bit overpriced, although I do really like them. Perhaps after I start at a law firm I'll get one for myself.

When my sis got her Phd, she thinks the watch budget was $2k... I'm just assuming that I will get the same. My parents will also be paying for my Barbri course, and my wedding in a year or two, though, so I don't want to go that high if I can help if.

Oooh, I was looking at The Watchery because they had such cheap prices for Ebel! I thought it must be too good to be true... I've heard that some unscrupulous websites will basically have watches with genuine "outsides" but that the "insides" are cheap replacements... but you've had good luck with them? If so, maybe I'll go for more bling!
Off the topic, the barbri courses are great for review and for information on areas that you may not have taken classes in while in law school. There is so much information to digest try not to get overwhelmed. As to watches, what about one of the classic Tiffany watches?

Update: finally ordered a watch today during Ashford's Columbus Day sale! I went with an Ebel Beluga Tourneau: http://www.ashford.com/product_info.php?products_id=15413@Ashford&qid=

I haven't seen it in person, so hopefully I will love it. If not, a Movado factory store just opened an hour away...

I decided it wasn't worth the extra $1k to get the Cartier, nor this Tiffany that I also loved: http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Ite...params=s+5-p+1-c+288186-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+

I am getting married next year, and not making much money yet, so I think staying around the $1000-1500 mark is reasonable for where I'm at right now. But thanks for all the suggestions! I will keep them in mind for the future.
