If it doesn’t have the webbing or leather trim down the front, is it still a Boston bag? The size says yes, the details say? I saw a similar bag called a “Doctor” bag. Is that a Gucci name or a term just used by private sellers? I only ask because I a history buff of all types and buy vintage because I love the background.![]()
Thanks!They're all Bostons.
From the minis to the large. Only sometimes are the travel sizes called holdalls.
The webbing in either blue/red or green/red makes them a web-stripe Bostons.
The Doctor's bag is a generic term and has nothing to do with Gucci. Years ago, when doctors reg. made house calls, including carrying medicines, Drs would have precious potions and pills in glass bottles/jars in the bottom of their leather bags, their instruments on top. To keep everything exactly in-place they were semi-structured and had frames, domed on-top when shut, easy to see all at once when opened. Bostons are actually closer to travel holdalls and duffles that came from military and utility wear, no frames, light and practical. They were made smaller over the course of the 20C.
