Please help me choose an engagement ring!

Hi everyone！Next week I’m going to Portland which has the only one tax-free Tiffany store in the states to purchase my engagement ring. These days I’ve been looking through Tiffany web site day and night and finally found two items just perfectly match both of my budget and my style.


setting: 1.31ct/i/vs2 - 18.400 usd

soleste: 1.02ct/h/vvs2 – 18.500 usd


I know the color and clarity aren’t very good but I don’t have high expectation about them anyway. The only thing makes me torn is the carat. Since these two are almost the same price, I’m not sure if I should go for the bigger one (1.31ct setting) or the smaller one (1.02ct soleste)? My husband prefers the bigger one but the halo of soleste is sooo stunning…


I hope I can wear both of them and upload a photo but unfortunately there is no tiffany store in my town…


This is my first time to buy a diamond ring and probably the last time lol. I dont wanna upgrade my engagement right in the future even if I became rich lol...So which one are you preferring or would you recommend? Any opinions would be appreciated.

I’d go with the soleste. It’s amazing and the halo around makes the diamonds look bigger. I wouldn’t choose the other one because the knife edge band is very uncomfortable to wear.

Try on both rings in person and then decide. Also try on a few wedding bands with both rings.

You need to factor in the cut of the stones too. See them in person and then decide. If the cut on both are equal, I personally would pick the solitaire as that’s what I have.

I would pick the larger one just going by the listed stats. I also strongly prefer the solitaire setting. I don’t find it uncomfortable at all.

I think the solitaire is beautiful but I really do not like halos. I think they are going to end up looking dated.

But you have to go with what makes your heart sing. For such a large purchase I would try, if you can, to make a road trip to a store and try on the options. I don’t know how you pick a ring without seeing it in real life.

I would go for the soleste. I have a soleste and the halo is so beautiful and sparkly. I’ve had the ring for 5 years now and it is still takes my breath away every time I look at it! Good luck! Portland is my home town. It is a great store. Ask for Stephanie. She is amazing!!

I absolutely love halos and wear 2 halo rings. The color and clarity of those diamonds will be absolutely lovely! Any jeweler will tell you that a VS OR VVS is a wonderful clarity! And honestly, even as a perfectionist, h or i color will appear lovely to the everyday naked eye. I think you will be very pleased. Now go try on those rings and pick the one that makes your eyes and heart sparkle! Try not to think about what is in “style” right now. Everything in fashion comes and goes and you must choose a diamond for what pleases YOUR eyes (and your husband’s).

Wait until you see them in person and try them on. Is it possible to set up an appointment to view rings and let them know what you're looking for? I'm not sure if they do that, but it may be worth a shot as it could give you more options than what they have in store normally.

I don’t think you should rush. I would go for the classic solitaire. Halos are beginning to look dated, like the “3-stone” ring of the past.

I would wait for a VS2 H color. I would not get an I color as you will be able to see the yellow, especially if you wear other diamond pieces. It will become apparent and once you see the yellow, your eye will not be able to un-see it.

Call the store, tell the SA you are coming and have the SA search rings for you. I did that and asked to see three rings after she sent me the reports. Saw them in real life and picked one. Easy!

I have a classic solitaire and love mine! Super sparkly.

honey get the soleste! If i were you i would! Tiffany’s soleste is so delicate and sparkly. The halo adds sooooo much sparkle and fire, not to mention the small diamonds around the band. I think for round cut H VS2 is just perfect. For round cut you can even go with I SI1 because of the crush iced look so it’s hard to see any imperfection w the naked eyes. For cuts like cushion/emerald then yes, have to choose at least H VS1 and above because their inside is so clear, it will easily show any imperfections.

I prefer the solitaire - but you should choose the one that feels right for you.

I prefer the Soleste, but would not go any lower than a G. The side stones are near colorless and H would show color next to it.

I think you really need to try them on and then decide. Forget about the stats and go with which one speaks to you the most. Having said that, I do prefer solitaries so I would go with that one! They are both beautiful , no wrong choice here!
