Platinum or Palladium?

^I've never heard of anything like that. platinum doesn't lose metal when scratched...the metal is displaced. if you weigh a platinum ring the day you buy it & weigh it 20 years later, it will weigh the same. gold will not...the metal is lost when scratched.

I've also NEVER heard of a platinum HS ring...ever...especially a ring for a male. perhaps your mom is mistaken. I can't imagine that your cousin's ring was platinum.
 
Twisted: Platinum is recognized by jewelers to be the finest precious metal. Its dense, heavy and lasts longer than gold for reasons stated. Platinum doesnt tarnish or discolor although it will patinate but all metals do with wear. However, gold is easier to work with from bench jewelers standpoint. Gold is also much lighter which is often a benefit. Both are precious metals with beauty and value. Pick what you like visually and practically
