Sorry to bump an old post, but I did a Google search on this bag and this thread came up.
I got the exact same colors as the OP (dark brown & light tan) from my local outlet last week, and the shoulder strap is removable on the one I got, and on the other one of the same color on the shelf. I didn't think to check other colors. So, if anyone was holding off on this one because of the shoulder strap, I hope you can find one with a removable strap in the color you're looking for.
