Pearl question

My understanding is that Freshadama have a very high lustre, but the nature of Akoya lustre is different - sharper, more mirror like. However I've seen some comparison shots after lots of googling, and in many cases, the difference was minimal.

I just don't understand "orient", maybe it's something you need to see first hand and the camera does not pick up?

Must say I'm heaps more clued in about pearls now than was a day ago.

Ok, I'm fairly set on Freshadama pearls, because it seems that although they are different to Akoyas, they are still gem quality pearls, an investment piece, and (happily) still at better prices to Akoyas. When I finally get around to purchasing, I'll be waiting for a strand with good orient, and I'm happy to wait it out.

Anyhoo.... I'm tossing up a few things. First, size. It's either the 7.5-8mm or the 8.5-9mm. My first instinct is the larger ones but I'm unsure - I'm 36 years old, 5'4" and small to medium frame, so unsure what looks best and whether the small ones will work when I'm 50... But at the same time I don't want to pay a premium for the larger size if they won't look that different. The price is about double.

Other question - should I buy a complete set with the necklace, studs and bracelet, or forgo the bracelet? Do those of you with sets wear all the pieces?

I'd rather save money on that item if I won't wear it much (I'm so unsure about that), but I also don't want to regret not having a matched set later...

Ahh, decisions! I've never been into pearls before, but I'm suddenly obsessed!

This is a closed thread jam-packed with pearl information. I learned so much from reading it. http://forum.purseblog.com/the-jewe...-a-rant-401187.html?highlight=pearl+education
I will also say, from personal experience, that akoya pearls have a more mirror-like lustre while the freshwaters are not as shiny but they are still lovely. I have ordered from Pearl Paradise and The Pearl Outlet and been extremely pleased with the ordering process and the beautiful pearls.

I would love an akoya strand but they are so shiny that some might think they are imitation! I am saving for a freshwater strand, 8 mm is as large as I like.

If they offered Freshadama at 8mm I'd go for those, but they don't. I love the Akoyas too - PP claims the lustre on Freshadama is approaching it.

Oooh, it's all fun! I think I also want a pair of baroque dangle Tahitians too now!
