I've been using PP for purchases on ebay for years. I heard from a more experienced PF member that she doesn't really use it much these days as the sites like Poshmark and TRR accept credit cards. so is PP unnecessary now? does anyone use it? it is good for ebay but no necessary for other sites?

It's not an "or" situation if your PayPal goods and services is drawing from your credit card on file. That's how mine has always been set up. Among other things, it assures credit card protection and you accrue whatever benefits there are for using the card. Plenty of retail websites, not just resale ones, accept Paypal linked to a CC.
^ Agree. I use PayPal exclusively on retail sites if I have the option. I like the protection, plus I don’t have to get out my credit card to enter in manually.

I just made a purchase using my CC direct
In the past I've always used by PP linked to a small checking acct but that account is depleted right now
guess I should have done PP linked to CC (which is set up but I don't usually use that way)
Hopefully there won't be any issue. but if there was, wouldn't you be able to dispute with your CC?

Yes, a chief benefit of payment via CC. It's the added layer of protection.

yes, talking about my current transaction....I didn't use PP but used CC so I guess PP would have given an extra layer of protection but if anything needed to be disputed I could do that with the CC company
You're protected as is.
I see it as three possible layers of recourse: the seller (hopefully it ends there), then PP, and then ultimately the CC if the other remedies don't work.

Gotcha. I only mentioned PP in a general way, referring back to the thread's title and first post.
During the pandemic my credit card number got stolen four different times. It was happening almost every three months. I used to use my credit card on pretty much every site, except eBay because I had to use PayPal there. After the last time my number got stolen I started paying for everything online with PayPal, still using my credit card but through PayPal. That way no sites got my credit card number or stored my credit card number. So far my credit card has not been breached since. Knocking on wood.

I've always used PP for ebay and Poshmark automatically uses PP for my purchases. this more recent one was for TRR which I haven't used before. Hopefully all goes well.
I never thought of this additional reason for using PP!
If you buy for example a CPU through a paypal account linked to a credit card my understanding is PayPal pay for the cpu and you then give PayPal the funds required for the purchase they made on your behalf. If you bought the cpu directly with your credit card then you bought the cpu so get the normal credit card protection. If you use PayPal I think this means you don’t get credit card protection for the seller of the cpu as you effectively did not buy it from them , PayPal did.

You're incorrect. Both payments are funded with the credit card so you have c.c. protection.
