They could have eliminated that ridiculous segment that was actually an ad for Disney’s remake of the little mermaid. I’ve never seen an upcoming trailer incorporated into the Oscars before. That wasted time that could have been used for the In Memoriam segment.

Yes, that took away credibility from the awards. It was a blatant commercial for the network’s parent company’s latest production. An ad for a movie during an awards show for the movie industry is an obvious conflict. Disney’s movies have been failing recently though so I can see where they’re desperate to pump up interest, particularly in a remake that’s almost shot for shot like the animated version. I was disappointed in the “live” action Lion King.

or pick people to acknowledge that are know by the tv viewers
I disagree with this. The "unknown" people are in most (if not all cases) Oscar winners. When they died, there was not a lot of notice beyond a basic obituary like most people get. They leave behind loved ones too. The loved ones of people like Paul Sorvino, Anne Heche and Tom Sizemore saw a lot of great tributes when their loved one died. For the survivors of those "unknowns" this is the one tribute they get.
If the issue with leaving out Paul Sorvino is that his family is furious, then why do the families of those "unknowns" not matter? Don't they matter more because they don't have the avenue to voice their reaction?

Except the Academy also included well known people in the in memoriam section. Olivia Newton John, Racquel Welch, Irene Cara, Ray Liotta, Angela Lansbury, and Burt Bacharach are some of the better known names that were included. And while thinking about some more of the well known names that were left out, why would you include Burt Bacharach but not Stephen Sondheim? The Academy has controversy every year about well known names they’ve forgotten to add to the in memoriam section. This is not rocket science so they should have developed a better system by now so I wonder if they do it deliberately to keep people talking about the Oscars.

It wouldn't be the Oscars without a controversy.

Stephen Sondheim died in 2021. They probably had him in last year’s ceremony.

Agree with the sentiment that the technical and off the screen artists deserve acknowledgements too but it is unfair not to include well known and well respected actors such as Mr Sorvino.
Was it his stand for his daughter and the metoo movement that caused the overlook?
He delivered very good performances both on the small and big screen.
If the Academy can’t deliver an accurate and fair list, maybe create a special way to recognize people in a different way?
Plus, this year, they acknowledged WB studio and yet some movies were not even produced by the studio.
What gives?

you would think they would have someone writing the name on a list every time a member of the academy or a well known person in the industry dies....then possibly edit the list
What's hard about that?

Imo it was noticeably shorter this year. The producers may have been thinking more about time and gambled that people wouldn't notice any omissions, but if so that thinking backfired. They did say at the end of the segment to go online for a more complete list. And I'm sure they do keep a running list throughout the year.
