Opinions needed on engagement ring

I thought it was kind of expensive too. Since the money is already invested there, I have to figure it out. I told the fiance that worse case we just get the diamond and go someplace else for the ring if I can't find one I really am in love with. I think they are overpriced too, but the ring is platinum. There rings start at $1,000 for the setting. The other setting I am looking at is I think $4,000. I'll posts pic of that. I looked online last night and got prices for diamonds with the cut and clarity at blue Nile...they were in the $5,000 range...so I am going to see if I can get a better quality diamond with that other ring if I like it in person.

Yes that is still pretty pricey because you have no idea what the quality of those stones is. If someone like Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch or Leon Mege, or even Brian Gavin Diamonds was selling that setting for $4k or 5k, that would be reasonable because it would be hand-wrought with nice quality diamonds. But for a mass-produced setting? Hell no.

But back to the original ring and the price: the original ring is *way overpriced.* A 1ct H SI1 stone that is VERY well cut (and you don't have enough information to tell me this one is) should run you, lets say $6000-7000 or so. That setting, assuming the stones are average, and it's cast, probably would run $2000-3000 depending on the jeweler. So that's minimum 2000 overpriced. Minimum.

How much money are you into with this jeweler?

Thank you. I felt it was a bit overpriced. This is not a Kay or a Jared jewelry store....this is a high quality family run business. They use a local jeweler to make some of the rings, create their own and they carry others like David Yurman and Alex Sepkus. I believe we are about $6000 in. They use f/g for color and a VS clarity for their settings.

So you are now 6K in with someone who won't refund that? That's not a truly reputable, high quality business. But you are stuck with them so now what are you going to do besides overpay for whatever you select.

Does anyone else think 12k is too expensive for this ring? I don't have much experience with diamond jewelry but I would do a little more research to make sure they are not hiking up the price for no reason, I feel like 1 carat center plus 0.55 halo/side stones does not equal 12k but maybe I'm wrong

Omg YES!!!! The ring is very pretty but quite overpriced!!!!

I have to be honest here. The ring is overpriced and it doesn't look to be of superior quality. The stone in your first pic looks dark; I can't imagine that the cut is even close to ideal if it doesn't reflect any light. I'm not familiar with lay-away but is there a way to get your money back? Can you dispute it with your credit card company or is lay-away a cash thing? Ame has given you some great advice. I would look into diamonds online (i.e. Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, etc.) and have it set by someone reputable (i.e. Leon Mege, Victor Canera, etc.). If you can't get your money back, then maybe you can buy some fashion jewelry (i.e. DY) or a nice pair of diamond studs with your store credit.

Ideal cut diamonds can go dark in some lighting conditions. That's not indicative of poor cut in this photo. The issue is simply that she has no idea what she's getting in terms of quality and even the best cut stone of those specs in a setting similar to that should be less than that.

Not the best pic since it isn't set or sized just yet. I decided on a 1.10 color d, si1 princess with a .24 halo. It was $8,000 all together. Not a complete loss. Still felt like we overpaid but at least I found something I love. Not everyone is an expert at everything....please remember that when positing.

I think the ring you picked looks lovely. I like it better and think it is better value (from the limited info that was given) than the first one you posted. As long as you feel good about it is all that matters! Enjoy!
