I jokingly said to my DH that I wanted a new diamond ring for my next milestone birthday (yikes! don't ask which milestone!) and he said that yes, I should have one!

So now I have been perusing websites to get some ideas. I have tried on a few in stores and have determined that I'd like something around 3/4 carat. It's a good size for me and I prefer something not too large. But I can't decide on round or square cut.

My only hesitation with the square is that I wonder if in a few years I'll wish I got the classic round cut. With my first diamond ring waaaay back when, I'd chosen a froufy style and ended up having it restyled a few years later. I don't want to have to do that again. Especially since you can't restyle a diamond - just the setting.

I do know that I want a very plan, slim band. I want the diamond to shine alone. I will be wearing it with my existing wedding band.

Here's what I'm looking at (price is basically the same)

Round:

Square (but it would be in yellow gold):

and here's the band I would be wearing it with:

Would love opinions - I can't decide!

I agree with julide...get whatever makes you feel beautiful.

with that said, you do get the most for your money from a round diamond (oval for colored gemstones).

it is also my personal opinion that the princess cut (square) is a fad that will fall out of favor.

if you are buying something to stand the test of time, then round brilliant is the way to go!

I personally never liked princess cut stones. I always felt the square shape was too harsh, so I would always choose a softer cut like a radiant, round, oval, etc. Sometimes a princess will sparkle more than a round, though, it all depends on the stone and which kind of sparkle you prefer.

As LV said, the round will coordinate better with the band you've chosen.

I like the square cut. While it is certainly less popular then some of the other cuts, it's been around forever, so I don't think it will ever go out of style. I like the fact that it is just different enough and yet still so classic. I also like the contrast of the square solitaire against the brilliants in the band.

I agree with this post, esp. the highlighted part. I just my engagement ring and I was debating if the side stones in the engagement ring and also the wedding band should be round or princess (the center stone is a solitaire). The SA told me to go with round because it contrasts better. He said if I were to get princess all over my ring it would clash hard and kinda mesh. I didn't get what he meant until he showed me an example. I had to agree with him so DF and I agreed and bought the ring with the round side stones to compliment my princess center stone. It really makes it pop and stand out!! I love it!!

ITA! LOVE radiant. You could also consider cushion cut diamond.

I vote for the round. Round diamonds, in superior cuts, have more sparkle than any other shape, and they are classics. I like princess cuts, but feel they're getting more attention right now than they will in say, 10 years.
