You know, it ain't easy bein green, just ask Kermit. heheh.

Stuff like this is why I originally got really into estate, vintage, and old jewelry....so that at least the stones were already "out there" and then I was just bein green and recycling, when I wanted new jewelry. I prefer my own designs anyway.

There is fault and flaw in any good path or idea. The Kimberley act is a good start, but too many stones are still being dug, so I wonder. I'd be personally more sure than not that some BIG guys have found loopholes to stay on top.

Whoever stayed on top by being nice to anyone, anyway? kwim?

And all these embargoes and whatnot? Did you ever think it was b/c
1) someone ain't getting enough money up front

and/or

2) drive those prices up via good ol' supply and demand. Burmese ruby anyone???

My diamond stud earrings are from Whiteflash.com. I found them wonderful to work with and the earrings are very beautiful. They are ACA's, H VS2 Ideal cut 1.90 ctw. the savings were significant--I got them for $10,000 and saw similar earrings, not as nice (J SI2 AGS1) at the best jeweler near me for $15,000 at the same time.

I think you can maybe get a better deal now than I got (last October) because with the economy this kind of luxury product isn't selling well and jewellers whether online or in person might be willing to cut more of a deal.

My earrings were a 51st birthday present. Before I got them and also my anniversary ring, I looked up the blood diamond issue because some of my friends and also my oldest son had seen the movie 'Blood Diamonds' and were very stressed about people buying diamonds. And I didn't want to buy something that meant little children's limbs had been cut off! What I found was that the movie was made about conditions during a war that took place in Sierra Leone in the 90's before the Kimberley accords. Which now monitor the industry. I also found out that many of the African countries have a great deal of their economy based on diamonds which helps to keep their economies self-sufficient and that actually sending all this business over to Canada means people in Africa will starve.

Also, many people say, don't buy diamonds, buy another gemstone--and actually many of the gemstones are mined under worse conditions.

I would suggest that people do their own research and come to their own conclusions about this. It is an important issue which I do think its good to be aware of and I personally would not like to support cruelty towards other human beings.

You nailed it on the head. Diamonds are not the only mined gemstone and Africa isn't alone. Africa just gets nailed b/c it is a veritable hot bed for gems, period, and cheap (ly priced diamonds). I won't "go there" on genesis of anything........but did anyone else ever find it odd that virtually ANY and EVERY gemstone is found in Africa? Even those once considered to be single source, like alex?

IF you like shiny rocks as much as I do, you'd do well to understand what those stones are, where they come from, and how we get them. All of them. It ain't all indiana jones or leo w/a bad accent.

Jan228 was aware of that website..thanks for listing it here.

WillshopforfoodYou are correct. Today you have more guarantee of knowing the source of diamonds as opposed to buying a gemstone. That doesn't necessarily mean that all gemstones are involved in conflict though.
