I love Hermes, but both Birkins and Kellys have their flaws.

Birkin has no shoulder or crossbody strap, it’s a pain to get in and the shoulder drop is small. Kelly does have the thin strap, but the lock is fiddly, and it is unbalanced if it’s not closed.

Maybe Gucci bamboo top handle? But I don’t know if there is enough capacity. Gucci Diana shoulder?

Would you consider the LV Pochette Metis East West? It's available in monogram but also in leather for a more quiet style. I have three of them because it just work so well. Compact, light to carry but enough capacity, super easy access through the flap and easy to dress up and down for different occasions. Strap can be worn on the shoulder and crossbody or you could use the chain, also the leather ones are pretty much carefree.

Does anyone have a good bag that works for all occasions? Medium capacity but light, top handle, shoulder and crossbody straps? Versatile enough for l uses and occasions? I was thinking about the Hermes Birkin and Kelly, but are there other, better choices?

This are based on experience. I'm can't recommend what I have only seen.

The last H bags I would think of as one-and-done are the Kelly (fiddly if you are actually using and not just posing - unsafe open) or a Birkin (unless you are Jane Birkin).

The all-leather Hermes Garden Party (great shopper/work) the Evelyne (any casual occasions) Bolide, Plume or DS are much better options. This is my experience. Obviously, that's not what most want to hear. The K and the B are scaled travel bags. Put stuff inside and unpack when you get there is not the same as 100 pit-stops, opening and closing, and making sure your bag has it's own chair in a busy restaurant.

@Vintage Leather I would say the Gucci Bamboo Top-Handle (one of my favourite bags) is fab if you can carry water bottles and devices another way. Large is 36cm (you'd have to find preloved - but that was its original size) M 27cm a good handbag size. But they're rigid and don't like to be squashed/pulled/stretched and need to be sat-down when opened/closed. Like the H Kelly they're fiddly but like the K, for those that love them, they're worth it.

@A bottle of Red. I like the idea of a tote for all reasons and seasons. I've heard good and bad about Fendi PaB, to the point of irreconcilable, but they look gorgeous. I could recommend a BV Roma (have to be preloved).

Hermes Bolide - it’s secure, not too heavy, shoulder and/or hand carry, various sizes to choose from. I sold the only Kelly I bought - beautiful thing but too faffy to use, and too noticeable for my taste.

As PT mentioned, the BTH does share some inconveniences with the Kelly. It’s also an exceedingly elegant bag. What does make it superior to the Kelly is 1) the top flap is the same width as the bag - you don’t have to cinch all your bag contents, or limit yourself to using only the bottom 2/3 of the bag. 2) the turn lock is much bigger. The Kelly is a two-handed bag when you are opening it, and it’s hard for arthritic hands to grab the tiny turn lock. The big chunk of bamboo can be more easily grasped, and can be opened one-handed if you are using a walker or stroller.
