it is surely he knows what he is doing instead of telling people platinum does crack :-)

Well, it DOES CRACK. And yes, being a quality benchman can help prevent that.

I had my platinum ring resized and they cut it on both sides.So far there is no crack. I asked the jeweller if the resizing would make it weaker in the areas where it was cut and he said it wouldn' because they melt it down so there is no difference.

It sure does scratch though!.

In theory cracking is NOT normal or common, but it happens. There's usually a weakness in some capacity in that area, either from porousity in the cast, or poor rejoining of the metal when it's been severed.
 
For what it's worth, I spoke to my jeweller today about platinum breaking (over 100 years of experience in the jewellery biz). He confirmed that like any other metal, platinum can indeed break. Ame was/is correct :tup:

I believe if you exert enough force on something, no matter what it is, it will break.
