Omega Aqua Terra or Cartier Ballon Bleu for 32nd Birthday?

I just went through the process of buying a watch for a milestone birthday and was on the watchuseek forum a lot doing research. And if it matters to you, Omega is way more highly regarded to watch aficionados. Personally, I do like the look of the Omega better, much sportier and less fussy. An AT was actually what I wanted for my bday, but was out of budget.

My only suggestion might be, depending on your wrist size and if you want something that will look appropriate in dressier situations, is to consider a slightly smaller version like a 34 mm. I think the big watch look on women is winding down (excuse the pun!). Something 30-36 mm still has lots of presence and readability but won’t cover the whole wrist.

And I understand quartz is more convenient if you might not be wearing it every day. But imho there is something just so magical about having a little engineering marvel on your wrist and the sweeping second hand of an automatic. It just would take a few seconds to shake it and reset it if you let it stop.
I think I'm leaning towards the Omega. I feel like it's more "me" in this moment? I can see myself getting a BB at some point but thinking for my lifestyle and style at the moment the Omega may seal the deal!

I wish this model came in a 34mm!! I feel like that's a perfect size. I have this omega on hold and hoping to receive soon to see if the size works?

I love.how you describe the automatic movement! Ive never thought of it like that before - really does feel magical!

Definitely get and enjoy what you love now, not what you think may work later...none of us has a crystal ball to know what the future holds! A 38 mm will still be beautiful and look great...it was just a thought, especially if your wrists are smaller. Show us if your AT arrives!

I’m not a watch person but my brother, who is a massive watch guy, has the seamaster and loves it.
He would say go with the automatic and the watch brand over the jewellers for build quality.

I think they are both lovely but I think it is worth considering are you willing to commit to looking after an automatic and getting it serviced every couple of years etc? Or do you prefer the convenience of a quartz?

Also is there also a chance you might become a watch head and get into it as a hobby? If so definitely go with an omega.

I would always go with an automatic over a quartz movement. Always. That said, the Cartier is available in that size and in the two tone with an automatic movement.

Watch aficionados will generally say that a watch brand is preferable to a jewelry brand; objectively that may be true. But I always advocate going with the one that speaks to you. I recently bought a watch as a milestone piece, and while many watch lovers attempt to steer people away from Tag Heuer, I looked at Rolex and Omega and Breitling. I tried them on and considered them. But they didn't do it for me, if that makes sense. The TAG was "my" watch, and I don't regret it a bit. For the dollar amount I am sure others may think I could have had "more" for my money, but it wouldn't have been more to me. So it is most important that you get what you love and will wear. If that's the Omega, great. If that's the Cartier, don't let anyone tell you that something else is "better."

Hi There! Just received the watch in the mail. I looked at both, and while I love them both, the Omega just suited me personally more. I have a very active and relaxed lifestyle and worry the Cartier would get wrecked. Here she is and couldn't be happier. Thank you everyone for you thoughts and reccos!

Gorgeous watch! I love the mix of white and rose gold on the dial, the texture, everything! For my own milestone watch (next year) I'm debating between the Omega AT SS with white dial/rose gold markers or the Cartier Santos 2-tone, but both the water-resistance and high quality movement have got me leaning also towards the AT. That and it's such a beautiful piece! Congratulations!
