Here are some pix of the Uomo Ardoise Tread Cabat from Edgar at Crystals. The BV Boutique at Crystals in Las Vegas has the only one of these to make it to the US. The price is $16K. It is gorgeous behind belief, very supple, and not as heavy as I expected. I so want this bag but DH thinks I will need an armed guard to accompany me on my travels should my resourcefulness figure out how to fund her acquisition.
Edgar describes the artisan process to create this unique Cabat:
"This hand bag is one of a kind. It is made of Nappa leather and its craftsmanship introduces an important theme in the Urban Carriers collection. The inspiration comes from the automotive world: luxury cars and their mesmerizing peculiarities, such as their alluring interiors, their polished components, and the scenery around them like greasy mechanic shops and endless highways.
In fact, the visual effect of our Cabat recalls the tread of the tires. The result is achieved by combining special techniques which are labor intensive and meticulously performed by our expert artisans.
A crucial step is the preparation of the Fettuccia: first a large piece of leather is pleated, then it is cut into several Fettucce, and later it is hand woven as our traditional process. Just before the final assembly, a selected team of artisans dab a dark dye on both sides of the Cabat. The striking outcome is reminiscent as the greasy floors of a mechanic shop.
While the original Cabat takes 2 days to be manufactured, this special style requires 3 days. The leather used for this model is double than the amount usually necessary for the original model because of the pleating. Because of this special craftsmanship Cabat Tread bags are offered in limited edition. It is the only one in the US."
