BTW, can we be sure that the stores have a great selection of diamons in stock? We are only in NY for 5 days, so there is not a lot of time for the store to order if they do not have the desired size or whatever.

I am from Ny and both myself and my SIL bought our engagements rings from jewelers in the diamond district. just go in knowing what you want and what you want to pay, be confident and get it appraised and you will do great!

If you go to several stores, you are bound to find what you want in at least one store. If you're only planning to go to one or two stores, it's OK to call them a few days ahead of time, tell them what you're looking for, and ask what they will have for you to look at.
