I have no idea what the norm for settings is, relative to the ring. If you buy a $20K ring, is $5K too much to spend on a setting, for example? I have zero point of comparison since most of my friends did not buy loose diamonds, as I probably plan to.

I guess solitaire rings would have relatively inexpensive settings, around $1K?
Editted to add: Oh, I see online that a 14K gold solitaire setting is about $350.

yes, tiffany style settings are very inexpensive if you don't go w/ a branded company. Usually between free w/ purchase of a stone to $1k.

It's really so subjective. . .
I personally would rather have a $5k bigger stone - I mean I'd rather put $5k MORE into my stone than in little diamonds for a setting and upgrade the setting one day if the DH wasn't keen on a stone upgrade like some guys aren't.
KWIM?

That's a good point! I don't know if "bargaining" is bad etiquette or not, but I will ask if they don't mind throwing in a setting for me... is that bad? lol

Mine was between 5- 6 thousand. I can't remember the exact amount! It is a Tacori, and I just saw that they've had a price increase. Seems like every one is having a price increase these days lol!! I love that the engagement ring is engraved only and the wedding band is engraved and has diamonds. They are very tiny but I personally love how diamonds sparkle in platinum!
I thought at first I would be like Swanky and would just do a more simple setting, but I had never had a round diamond before, and this setting and my diamond were like they were made for each other. I know most women will think I am crazy but I have had a lot of rings- a lot- but same husband. I have had emerald cut, marquise, pear, and radiant. I get bored way too easily!!!! All of them have had different settings too. I have gone up in size and down in size and back up again. When I saw my Tacori, it was the first one that I thought I might keep for my daughter, that's when I knew I really loved it. My best friend is in the jewelry business and that can mean trouble for a girl like me.
It took a long time for me to find the right one. The best advice I can offer is to look, look, and look some more!!!!! GoodLuck!!!!!

My plain platinum setting probably ran about $800 at the time. I am looking into having a new one made that will run $1500. Itll still be plain platinum (meaning no diamonds or engraving or anything).

Annie, yes! Totally ask if they can mount it on thier tiffany band for free if you buy a stone from the:yes:
They may do it w/o you asking anyways, but we weren't about to pay for a plain tiffany setting after shelling out that much $$$ on a bigger stone.

$800, my stones were tiny though. It was just all labor.

We didn't bargain too because he was actually reasonable with his price compared to others.

Annie,

If you go to Chicago's jeweler's row and get a pre-made setting, it's SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than anything custom made, even if what you're making is SOOOOOOOO similar to what they already have.

Look around for already made bands that calls out to you, if none does, then go for the custom route.

I was looking at halos and whatnot and I was quoted $500-600 for a pre-made, however there were just little details that I didnt like so I opted for going with a custom and taking all the weird stuff out!

Im having my diamond reset in a Gelin Abaci Tension mounted ring. Its being customed designed for me with both yellow and white gold. They are charging me $850 for the setting and mounting. I cant wait to get it back from them.
PS With the price of gold going up. So might settings purchased right now.

I'm with Swanky - I'd much rather have more money in the stone than in the setting. Also, (just my opinion) a solitaire setting is more classic and timeless than *most* settings with stones.

My engagement ring band is palladium, the prongs are platinum, and it was less than $1,000. Looking at palladium over platinum can also save you a significant amount of money - both Scott Kay and Tacori are using it now.

mine is a platinum setting with approx 1 ctw in side stone for $1700. my diamond was bought for approx $8300. as much as i could have had more money for a larger center stone, wanted that no metal, all diamond look, which sets of my center stone so wonderfully . since getting my e-ring a lil over 2 years ago, i saw that my setting went up to $3299 :wtf:. now that, i would not have bought!! much rather have that $$ in a bigger rock! i personally don't really get super pricey settings, though, unless $$ is no object. u can usually get a similar look for thousands less, so why spend the $?
