I think it would be silly to do something that would make you unhappy, just because something is tradition. Why begin your married life (or the path to marriage) with something you hate and that would bother you everytime you look at it? I know a couple people who didn't get engagement rings and some who don't even wear wedding rings.

If you have always wanted a locket, then go for that. Put a picture of you and your BF on the day of the engagement inside of it, maybe, and everytime you wear it you will think of that day, which sounds like is what he wants. :smile1:

I liked the idea of a piece of furniture for the house or condo. Something you can look at everyday and think of your commitment. Maybe get a dream piece that you wouldn't normally splurge on.
