Nodini as first luxury, everyday bag?

Don't know much about BV's history compared to LV or Chanel, but it seems to be a preferred brand for those who wish to wear a more undercover, less in your face kind of bag? Do BV bags hold their worth in the long run?

Hi! I really like the Nodini but have hesitated because the strap is very long on me (I’m 5’2”). If it fit me, I’d love it because I could see using this all the time for an understated, hands free, yet luxurious lightweight option. (For the moment, I’ll stick with my Veneta hobos, which I find very easy to use, as well.)

As far as being a good “investment” or whether they “hold value,” it depends on what you mean. I think if you’re accustomed to frequent turnover of bags, selling older pieces to fund fresh new buys, then BVs probably won’t hold value in that sense. If you’re accustomed to buying a few pieces that you want to keep for a long time, then I think there is value in BV.

For me, I consider my well-selected BVs to have been good investments. As bags go, they’re expensive, but with ordinary care, they have held up longer (style-wise and wear-wise) than some other luxury bags that I’ve had (including LV, which I pretty much abandoned about 10 years ago). In that sense, my BVs have “held value” because generally speaking, I have not had to repair or replace them after many years of use. When I did have a repair issue, my BV sales associate took good care of me and made sure that the experience with after-sales support was a superior one.

I have several BVs in my collection that are between 8-10 years old but still look great, not dated in style, and I still use and enjoy them. They’ve “held value” better, and were better “investments,” than some impulse buys where the styles didn’t fit me, or were of lesser quality construction that fell apart or looked bad after a few years. So, at a minimum, I’d make sure that the Nodini style is the right bag for you, in a color that you love. That will boost your odds of it being a good investment. Good luck!

Excellent advice and insight from @blueiris as always. :flowers:

I couldn't agree more that BV bags (at least those of TM's reign) are timeless, classic and of the finest workmanship. My oldest BV is about 12 years old which I still love and use to this very day. It is still in great condition and doesn't look dated (imho).

Like @grietje said, get a BV because you love it and not to resell.

BV is an investment in your style and taste, and not the way to "shop, use, sell, repeat"
it will not recover your money on resale, but it will give you joy of outstanding craftsmanship and quality, as well as good, timeless tasteful piece to compliment your look for years!
I have a few Nodinis, and i absolutely love this model, it's very handy for running errands, travels, relaxed weekends, and many more occasions :)

Depending on the number of items you carry on a daily basis... I could never have the Nodini as a daily bag, I carry way too many things. That being said, I do love my Nodini for days I need to be hands free and don’t want to carry anything over just one shoulder, and can get away with just a few things.

Re: investment... BV doesn’t seem to hold its value in the resale market, but if you are not one to buy-sell, and plan on keeping it, it’s great. My older BVs, even those bought pre-loved, have held up well.

Thank you for the replies, what wonderful information has been shared so far - a lot to consider for sure!

I do have a question regarding the metallic colours for this bag that I have seen around the web, are these colours easy to acquire or are they perhaps more rare seasonal releases?

I think I’m drawn to the metallic colours as I really love a shiny bag myself, does BV leather become more shiny over time as well? The black Nodini at first glance seemed rather dull but I would need to take a closer look to be sure.

Another interesting question would be how classic the Nodini is in BV’s history? Is it relatively new or say comparable to the timelessness of an LV Speedy?

Also while I somewhat agree with the premise of ‘buy something because you like it’ @grietje I don’t think I agree with how you worded your answer for a beginner to BV because I don’t know the brand’s history. I personally wouldn’t find it wise to spend this kind of money on brands that don’t have a good history to their name to carry them into the future simply because I like their products but that could just be me. Again thank you to blueiris for your well-rounded answer.

Speaking of the BV’s future - new designer doesn’t seem very popular here! Hope the brand won’t be too negatively affected

They are seasonal releases. The Nodini Messenger was only ever available in Argento, Brunito, Rose Gold, a silver - maybe Antique Silver?, I think metallic Bluette? there might have been a bright gold done?

Older (80s & 90s era) BV bags got shinier, mostly due to the patina of the leather, but I have not seen a lot of patina on the majority of Nappa bags produced after 2003.

The Nodini Messenger Bag has been around 9 or 10 years in its most recent iteration. There was a similar looking bag done back in the 70s or 80s. Who knows if the new Creative Director will keep it. Louis Vuitton has been around 160+ years, Bottega Veneta, 50-something.
I’d wager that 95% of people have never even heard of Bottega Veneta. If you’re looking for something with brand history and recognition, you might want to go with Chanel, LV or Hermes.
You might not have agreed with @grietje ’s post, but I’d say she probably speaks for everyone on this subforum in that we all buy and carry Bottega Veneta because we like the look and feel of their bags. I doubt any of us care the slightest if someone recognizes the brand or knows the history. I think her point, and everyone else’s was simply this: buy what you like. Buy what suits you and your lifestyle, but don’t expect to get more than 50% of your money back when you’re bored with it in a year.
