Not that I believe spending FEMA money on handbags is a good idea, but I always think its a little dangerous when the government starts to tell you how you can and can't spend money.

If people are stupid enough to buy luxury goods and end up not having enough to repair their homes, let it be a lesson learned.

but doesn't it ultimately impact all of us?
Where are they going to live and who will pay for it, and feed their children . . . .

Yeah I had heard on the news that some of the people were using those cards to purchase LVs at the Atlanta store..
not exactly what they were to be used for..geez.
Since when was an LV bag more important than food and water??

Oh yea, the LV manager here told me she "confiscated" some cards that some of the people tried to use to purchase LV, even though she really didn't have a right. She said she cut them up in front of their face and yelled at them, security had to be in the store for about 5 weeks straight. UGH!!!! But I agree with her, that is horrible what some people did.

Dang, looks like LV bags was on everyone's most wanted list. :amazed: How much $ do they get on those cards? It is really sad that they rather buy bags than eat or have a roof over their head.

That's awesome! hehe I'd like to yell at them!

I know it's easy to feel outraged by this. But judging by the enjoyment of the whole of US getting into credit card debt with our hideous spending habits, isn't it a bit easy to draw the conclusion a section of people would spend their new money horribly?

According to Motley Fool's CC debt Stats:
  • Total consumer credit: $1.7 trillion.
  • Credit card debt carried by the average American: $8,562.
  • Total finance charges Americans paid in 2001: $50 billion.
  • Percent of U.S. households deemed credit worthy by the lending industry: 78%.
  • Number of credit card holders who declared bankruptcy last year: 1.3 million.

I'm from Houston also and zomg, I totally did see more people at the mall. It was bad plus the people from New Orleans who didn't give a crap would drive wrecklessly. They're taking advantage of everything and everyone. The thing that sucks is that they won't leave and New Orleans doesn't want them back so we're stuck with them.

LOL, and even AFTER they used up all the funds, they were STILL asking for more. I think about 8 months after the hurricane, FEMA stopped paying for their rent for their apartments and they were protesting. I don't get it. 8 months to find a job and they still won't do it.

I'm in SA and know exactly what you mean! We bussed ppl back to vote in NO and then they CAME BACK HERE !!!!!!!! UGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE STILL WANTING FREE STUFF, I would love to tell them to do what the rest of America does, Get a freaking job!

The government has every right to tell the people what they can or can not spend their money on when the money comes from a government fund for housing and emergencies.

Lazy morons!

When I first heard this story I was upset. Then I talked to my co-worker and she brought up a valid point:

Some of those people were dirt poor to begin with. They dreamed of owning luxury goods like they see in music videos.

I guess they couldn't resist the temptation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's right, but I can see her view point.

I'm very glad that you made that point.

I certainly don't agree with spending FEMA money on Louis Vuitton or any luxury goods but what you said is true. I think that's absolutely why a lot of them did what they did.

For some of those people they would never otherwise be able to own things like that. It was a temptation. And many gave in to that temptation.

I live in a suburb of Houston and when those FEMA cards were given there were so many people at the Houston Galleria you wouldnt beleive it. With bags and bags of clothes, tennis shoes, etc.,

Its sad. I'm not passing judgement. But its just sad. When you give a lump sum of money to someone who would have never had access to it (all in one lump sum) many are going to make the wrong decisions.

In my opinon BOTH the citizens AND the government are to blame. Why would you give a debit card to someone in need and not specifiy how it is to be used. That was a disaster waiting to happen.

Wow, I didn't know anything about this. But I am not so concerned about the adults who wasted their FEMA money on luxury items. What I'm more concerned about is the children of some of those people, who are receiving the irresponsible message that having a home to rest in is less important than a pair of designer shoes that the average kid will destroy in a month.
