Hello!

I am looking for a black leather handbag with gold chain shoulder strap (a la Chanel but not Chanel). It’s intended use is both casual and formal.

I found options across Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton. The three handbags in the running are below but I found limited talk about the newer wave LV bag (I found plenty on YSL envelope and none on the this Gucci 1955). Please share your experience if you have or looked at these bags. Opinions and other options also welcomed.

many thanks!

Not a fan of the LV bag, but then again, I'm not an LV girl.

I have the YSL (black on black), bought mine in 2017, it is my most used bag and is very sturdy. The hardware at the front is just starting to chip and I asked my SA yesterday if it could be re-painted/re-plated, she said yes of course and asked me to bring it in.

The Gucci one is quite cute. I like the simplicity and the history with the horsebit, but I have no experience with Gucci bags except that I know that they're made in the same factory as YSL ones, which hopefully means that their quality is if not very similar, the same.

This is very helpful!

YSL black on black bags look so stealth and fantastic but do worry about paint chipping. It is good to know YSL can repair, as well that both Gucci and YSL share manufacturing.

is your envelope medium or large?

No problem  I believe repairs are free for the first 2 years, and then after that there is a repair fee. But for bags that are still in production, I think it won't be too costly.

It is a medium!

I like both the YSL and the Gucci. Although I think the YSL would possibly be more durable bc of the grained leather vs. the smooth of the Gucci. I do like that the Gucci bag appears to come with 2 straps to change things up a bit from daytime to night. The reason I’m not a fan of the LV one is I don’t like chain bags that only have 1 leather break. When doubled up as a shoulder bag I feel it’s uncomfortable to have 1 leather and 1 chain strap on my shoulder. The chain digs more. That’s just my experience though.

Yes, the Gucci handbag does come with two shoulder straps and gets points for versatility. Online, this 1955 leather bag appears to be textured and not completely smooth - possible bonus.

I like the back pocket in the YSL - why don’t more bags have this??

I own a Felicie and wear the (thinner) chain strap single and doubled up with no problem. This would be my first experience with a chain-leather combo shoulder strap. I will keep your experience in mind.

I don't have the exact same YSL bag, but I have one very similar - the YSL Tri-Quilted Wallet on Chain with gold hardware. That thing has been used and abused and it still looks brand new. The first time I wore it, I had to walk over a mile in a torrential downpour. It's been at concerts, bars, fallen on the floor logo side down more times than I can count...and doesn't show any wear and tear. It's also perfect for travel because it's compact to pack and can be both dressed up or down. Lastly, if you're in the US, I used the Rakuten app and was able to get 10% cash back when purchasing online through Neiman Marcus. So it was basically on sale! Good luck with your choice!

haha yes, it can definitely take a good beating! I was once in a Moynat store with my YSL bag in 2021, and the SA thought I had just bought it!

Thank you everyone for sharing your experience and thoughts. I am only hesitant with the LV since it’s kinda close to the Gucci Marmont but I like the size. I think the final choices are clear.

I would consider your age group, where you live, and how people in your age group at your intended social gatherings dress.

I’m mid-20s, living in NYC. I see a lot of people go out with certain bag styles, in settings and situations that don’t make sense, if you ask me. The YSL bag you posted at that size looks comical at a casual bar, and in formal settings too. I don’t care for any of the LV wave products, but I do think they lean more casual than formal.

The Gucci one you posted, if it’s the small, is the best option imo. I love Gucci horsebit. It’s understated, and those who know Gucci will know it’s Gucci. You don’t always need the whole room to know who/what you’re carrying.

Whichever bag you choose, I think size is the most important thing to consider. Casual bags can be small, or tote sized. Formal bags are almost always on the smaller side, and are rarely ever crossbody (usually clutch, or short/top handle).

My casual and dressing-up bags for a night out with friends (my age) are a Forever 21 black bucket, and a Coach Alie camera bag. Forever 21 is really just casual, but the Coach can be dressed up or down. Most of my friends that are my age don’t care about luxury brands, so I prefer not to use anything with heavy or obvious branding. I’ve been snubbed by friends of friends for not carrying luxury at some social gatherings, but I’d consider that a good thing, to be honest.

I’ve been eyeing the LV Speedy 20 in black empreinte or the Keepall XS in black taurillon as other bags to pick up though. I want my bags to be durable, and I like LV quality and the after-purchase care too. Since I purchase bags with the mindset of “forever,” I want something I can keep for years, and send in for evaluation and repairs.

My friend has a Chanel diamond bag. Not sure of the exact style code or of the price of it, but I really like it . It’s not a “in your face Chanel” at all, and it’s easy to dress up or down. Linked to show the style and size.

If I really need something for a formal situation that isn’t a function/event, like going to the opera or ballet, then I’ll use a small and structured luxury crossbody that can be converted to a clutch or top handle. I would prefer no heavy branding. My dream casual and formal bag would be the Hermes Cinhetic in dark green alligator/croc… like this

I disagree with some of your points but appreciate the thoughtful response.

For context, I am a 43 yr old living in Central Florida and our scenes are not as formal…well, where I go. I have shopped/lived long enough that everything old has become new. I like mixing up my outfits/style based on how I feel and it fits. I don’t mind sticking out. I like using my accessories to spruce up my look but 90% dress comfortably. I am looking to nab a particular shoulder bag style that is versatile with some chain and more formal than my Speedies and Alma BBs. I have an evening clutch covered with a YSL uptown pouch.

I absolutely agree with “if you know, then you know” mindset. I don’t care if others think it’s fake or don’t recognize it.

FYI: The Gucci bag is taller and longer than the above LV wave bag but lacks depth. The strong appeal is the simplicity and timeless Horsebit.
