New changes regarding the Damier Ebène Speedy (and quality in general)?

i agree with what you said, if this is their "reason", their repairs/spa service would lose ton's of money because many ppl would not need to replace their ebene leather anymore. also, why can't they fix the vachetta cracking so their reasoning doesn't add up to me how they only chose to fix one leather type. it's just a bunch of excuse to skip costs.

the more matte a leather is, the more prone it is to drying..
having an additional shiny coating at least protects it, kind of like moisturizing your skin by putting a film over it to prevent from cracking
:facepalm::rolleyes:
This is why I can't contribute to TPF as much as I used to anymore.

We love our bags but like shoes and everything else, it's going to show some wear at some point.

I think LV is standing behind their products and trying to correct issues like with matte handles in DE.

Some designs have known issues (hello folded corners), but it's inevitable ....

Does someone know any other brand who would replace or give store credit for a bag wich is 3/5 years old due to a known issue ? I have a glazing problem (cracked) with a mini marcie and I'm still waiting for Chloé to tell me what they are going to do ... It's been two months ...

I’d actually love to trade my older ebene bandouliere to the new matte version if it’s more malleable. When the bag gets heavy the strap really digs IN to my shoulder in a way my vachetta strap doesn’t, so I’d love it if the leather is softer.

Dear PurseForum-members,

the PurseForum has always been the place for me to research upcoming purchases and evaluating, if a bag would work out for me or not (back then as a non-member) and now I am finally in action myself.

Since I have established a (for me) very satisfying collection and since I have noticed quite a few (in my opinion, not very favourable changes) in Louis Vuitton’s marketing strategies (price increases while lowering the quality, throwing bags onto the market and then taking them back after only a few months to put their customers – as I assume – under pressure to buy them) I have generally grown more and more skeptical of the whole brand, which I used to be a very big fan of, and therefore do not buy nearly as much as I used to.

Around two weeks ago my mother wanted to complete her small, but excellent collection by adding a Speedy B 30 in Damier Ebène Canvas. We (as usual) ordered the bag online and even though I knew, that I would look very thoroughly at all the details, because of bad experiences in the past (e.g. an ordered Nice BB, that someone definitely already had travelled with, judging the condition it was in), this time I was more confused, than I could have ever expected:

At first glance the bag was fine (and „Made in France“, which is always nice). There were no signs of any use (as it should be) and everything seemed great, but something was… odd. At first, I did not know what it was, that bothered me, but then I noticed, that the color of the treated letaher was not the usual neutral-toned chocolate-brown, but more so a cool, grey-toned brown and the finish was not shiny, but more so satiny/matte (my Speedy B 25 is on the left in the photos for comparison). I almost thought, they must have skipped the last step in production…

Since my mother did not want to keep the bag after I had pointed out the difference, we drove to our local LV-store, where they did not have the Speedy-model (which I almost could not believe, since it is one of their classics), that we wanted. So we drove to a different store (which is almost a 45 minute-drive away), where they had two bags left, but the waiting time (have they always had waiting lists in store?) was 1 hour (Okay… bye!), therefore we could not look at the bags in person and see, if their leather-treated-parts were different, too – plus: we were quite fed up at this point. My mother now bought her Speedy pre-loved and in the previous „style“ (if the ordered Speedy is the „new look“).

My question is: Did anyone notice the same difference with their recently bought Speedy/Damier Ebène-bag(s)? If so, do you think, this is an intentional change regarding the look of the bag or do you think (which is, to be honest, my assumption), that they might have lowered the quality-standards/made the production-process easier, which results in a different look?

Thank you for taking the time to read my first thread – I am excited for your experiences and opinions!
Completely off topic, but wow you could be a hand model!

Okay. I'm sure people would still post on the main thread even with a "Is this Defective" subform and it would be too much work for y'all. Thank you for replying.

A subform holds many threads, Really each brand only needs one thread. Why not just open a thread entitled "The 'Is This a Defective LV?' Thread'

Back to topic. You may find that the newer matte leather will obtain a sheen through ageing/use. I would also guess that it's the matte-ness of the finish that is making the trim look more grey and not an official change of colour.

So this 'new' leather on the speedy damier ebene is actually over a couple years old. I bought one in Paris a few years ago and it had the new leather. It is rubbery, gets slightly shinier over time and also gets more flexible over time. Honestly feels a little cheaper than the old leather but has held up very well over the years- no issues. I take care of my bags but dont baby them.

Well, as I wrote on another thread about cracked canvas on a Speedy, I just received a replacement for a 2-year old Speedy B DE due to a crazy amount of cracking along my zipper line.

What I noticed with the new one is the entire bag was less shiny and the color of the canvas on my new 2020 version seemed lighter, too. But it could just be that the 2017 one was more aged. One thing the handles on my old one were already starting to feel a bit sticky, and I don't use handheld much. When the SA looked at that, he said it was the leather had peeled from use there and that the new matte handles should perform better. Honestly, as sad as I was to part with my trusty, older Speedy (and I think I like the glossy look more), I could not abide by the amount of cracking it had suffered, so I was glad they did right by me with a brand new bag.

Hi,
I just wanted to ask how the new damier ebene leather is holding up? Does it have any water marks, cracks, etc? Do you prefer the old shiny or the new matte leather? Thanks!

Hi there! It has held up great. No water marks, no cracks. Just some wrinkling from use that is normal wear. And even though I wasn't using it every day due to the pandemic, whenever I did go out shopping or to fly across country three times to be with my parents, it came with me! So it still had a lot of use, was in the rain etc. I do think the glossy leather of the past looked more lux, but the malleability of the current matte leather means it's not as stiff and not prone to cracks.
