Before I forget I wanted to discuss leather corners on Dooney handbags.
In years gone by Dooney used a lot of large leather corners on a variety of handbags...
hobos, satchels, etc. Many of the designs were pebbled leather and the corners
were a smoother vachetta leather in a caramel or darker brown color.
Aside from the design element (you either liked the look or you didn't),
the extra leather corner (bumper) did protect the bag from corner wear.
It was a second layer of relatively sturdy leather that kept the piping and
pebbled leather from being damaged by use and abrasion.
Have you ever seen a used bag where the leather covering the piping is worn
away and the corners of the bag are almost worn thru?
Yes, the corner bumpers could be scratched and their surfaces could be
damaged, but the underlying structure of the bag was protected.
And I think the leather used for the corner bumpers was thicker and
stronger than the leather used for the piping and the rest of the bag.
(Might not have been an issue for AWL in the olden days, but for
the more modern 'pebbled leather' its certainly a factor.)
And, just venturing a guess here.... theoretically corner bumpers can
be replaced a lot more easily than piping and main leather of a handbag.
Don't know if Dooney did any of this as part of a repair request... even
for a fee.
