I'm trying to surprise my wife with a new bag for her birthday. She uses this one pretty regularly ( Marc Jacobs Classic Q Francesca), so I think she would like something similar style and size wise. There are so many bags out there I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Preowned or older models are fine, it does not have to be brand new. The budget should be under 1k or less.

I should add, its this bag in a grayish stone color.

Thanks

Why don't you take her shopping so she can pick one she likes? Otherwise Marc Jacobs is the safest choice. Maybe a Hillier Hobo? It's popular among many here.

The Rebecca Minkoff Moto Hobo is another versatile bag, and she may find the outside zips handy.

Bags are highly personal so maybe don't guess.

In her birthday card, put a handmade 'voucher' for 'the bag of your dreams - up to $1K' that way you can give her a present on her birthday and then shop leisurely by taking her out shopping including lunch for a day to remember and a bag to remember that day together.

MbMJ sounds like a good bet too. I don't recommend buying anyone a pre-loved bag for a gift unless they choose it themselves (or unless they're vintage crazy).

I agree with paper tiger that a voucher might be the way to go. After carrying the bag she currently owns, she might have some ideas on what her next bag shape or colour would be more ideal, what she likes or dislikes about the MBMJ brand, etc. It's a total gamble at this point to buy MBMJ in my opinion, even if she is carrying it. (I say this as someone who has carried only one MBMJ to decide I didn't want another.) alternatively if you are set on buying her a bag yourself, asking her about bags might help guide you.

I also agree with papertiger's sentiment: look up and suggest some nice malls in your area, be a patient shopping partner, take her to a fancy lunch, be a patient shopping partner again if she hasn't found the bag yet, etc. It's very thoughtful of you to post on here. Good luck.

Great idea. I really wouldn't recommend guessing, whilst she loves the bag she has now, she might fancy something completely different from MarcJacobs and it might be an expensive mistake. My partner bought me a handbag as a present and I HATED it, I didn't have the heart to tell him and I carried that ghastly thing for a year!!

LOL been there too!

Thanks for all the thoughtful input, I appreciate it.

A little about my wife, she generally dislikes going shopping, would appreciate the surprise and not having to find one herself. Also, she appreciates value, so buying a preowned Chanel/Fill in the blank for 1k+ that will hold its value would be better than a $400 Kors that wont. That is the reason I mentioned preowned.

Following up on a few of the comments, regarding the Jacobs bag, I know she likes the shape and style, its not to flashy, but has some interesting features. Im sure she would love something similar.

For around 1k, you are not going to get a Chanel but I can suggest the Dior Granville Tote which is quite similar in the shape and comes with a messenger strap. I'm biased since I have this bag but it's got both glamour and practicality. It's discontinued so you can only get it preowned but do make sure you get it authenticated as there are many fakes out there.

So her style seems fairly casual like mine. Since she already has a larger bag that she really likes, perhaps a smaller crossbody bag would be the way to go. That will give her some versatility in her collection. Since she has not requested this bag, I would personally buy new right before her birthday so you would have the option to return the bag if she prefers something different. Anyhoo, some smaller casual higher-end crossbody bags are Gucci Soho Disco (mentioned above). Also, you might look at Chloe Mini Marcie Saddlebag and Chloe Nano Hayley bag. There is also the Balenciaga Hip bag. If I were you, I would get onto Neiman Marcus, Barneys, etc and browse their handbag selection. If you want a high end bag, you can find them there and see if they have any bags that fit your wife's style that are within your budget.

+1 to Balenciaga city bag. It's MBMJ 2.0 in the sense that it's slouchy, ages well, and is very supple and roomy. It'll also hold value much stronger than any of the contemporary brands (MK, Tory Burch, Kate Spade).

I mentioned the Balenciaga Hip bag. The City bag is definitely out of his price range (<$1000) unless he manages to find a one used but a nice used City will likely still be out of his price range.
