i have a wedding band that's white gold in the middle with yellow gold edge on top and bottom. it shiny and very feminine. i've seen my friend's platinum wedding band and it's just 'crazy' looking (still in a good way). it definitely shows all wear (gives it personality).

I prefer white gold over platinum. I like the weight of platinum, but I do not like the patina is wears over time. As for white gold yellowing...I think that how quickly it turns depends on body chemistry. My sister has a white gold wedding set that she has had to redip a few times in the 3 years she has been married, and her husband has a white gold wedding band that has not been redipped once. My anniversary ring is 14K white gold and it is still as white as the day I got it 1 1/2 years ago and I wear it everyday.

I was under the impression that platinum is softer than gold, not harder. I've found that it scratches more easily than gold, and was advised that a platinum prong setting is safer because of platinum's softness - that if banged on something the prongs will bend rather than breaking off, thus securing the diamond more than gold would. Have I been misinformed?

Platinum is the strongest & most durable of all jewelry metals. It does scratch but does not chip or splinter. Whenever a platinum ring has wear or scratching, it almost never loses any metal volume but rather the metal gets dispersed within the piece. You can wear it for a hundred years and it won't wear out.

Platinum prongs are softer and more likely to bend that gold prongs, but gold prongs are more likely to wear and need to be built up with added gold metal.

Platinum does tend to look dull and develop a patina over time, if you do not favor the patina and dullish appearance, you may prefer white gold.

I chose white gold simply because I wanted a diamond wedding band and the ones in platinum were twice the price and way out of my price range.

Also, since I have 12 diamonds in it, the only metal to be seen is underneath my finger and no-one would notice it.

Same with my engagement ring - no-one really notices the metal as it's underneath.

Whilst saying that though, I have to get them re-dipped once a year. I seem to have the body chemistry that's the worst for white gold. My husband on the other hand has a plain white gold band that still looks great.

It only takes a week, and it costs very little, but it's still a bit of a pain to have to get it done! At least it gets polished up at the same time. They really do come out looking just like the day you bought them. You fall in love with them all over again.

I'm really glad that since so little of the metal is visible, I can let it go for a good long time. Like, right now the underneath of my wedding ring is definately yellow-tinged, but nobody knows but me. I'll have to bite the bullet in the next couple of months though.

If you're getting a plain band I'd recommend platinum. Yeah, it scratches quite a lot, but nobody but you will really notice. Who's gonna get that close to scrutinise it? But if it goes yellow it will be noticeable and you'll have to be on the ball with getting it re-dipped.
