Hi I had some questions I was hoping a Tiffany's expert could help me on. I bought a whole bunch of sterling silver jewlery recently. My questions are:

1. One of the rings I bought has a huge amethyst stone. I've read that to clean silver with gemstones, it should be done differently because the gem can get damaged. What is the best way?

2. The jewlery box I bought smells like it is suede inside (it's the Elsa Peretti one). I'm guessing I should store the silver in a separate pouch inside the box. Should I keep them in the tiffany's blue pouch or a airtight bag, like a ziplock?

3. Last question! I've read so much on how to clean silver I got overwhelmed. I see that a 100% cotton cleaning cloth is great. Should I go to Tiffany's and purchase the one they sell, or is there another brand that would work just as well? (I read a little about Sunshine or Hagerty) Then do I do a polish? Should I get the tiffany's polish? I also read that the dips, toothpaste, and baking soda are very harsh too, so I'd like to avoid those.

i'm a fan of the cleaning cloth... works great on my tiffany and other silver pieces. plus, it won't hurt your gemstone, or the environment. good luck with your new silver pieces! btw, cute boston!

First off, don't store the silver in an airtight ziplock. It has something to do with oxidization... Tiffany's recommends you store the jewelry in the blue suede-type bag it came with. There are many different kinds of silver cleaner to use so you don't have to buy it from Tiffany's. I use connesiours silver cloths (I forgot how you spell it) but I have bought them from Walmart and Kohls before and are about $5. They have one side that cleans the silver and one side that buffs it super shiny after you are done...comes out gorgoeus!! I would def hold off on using the gritty stuff. Im sure some people have used it and it looks good afterwards but I try to keep all abrasive things away from my Tiffany's silver just to keep a little bit of extra care to it, kwim? These cloths should also be okay to use with the amethyst since its not submerged in anything, just be careful but buff it afterwards so the cleaner part doesn't stay on it...I haven't tried it before on gems so I would call Tiffany's first just to be certain. The best way to clean your amethyst ring is with a toothbrush and warm soapy water (that's what Tiffany recommends) be careful not to expose an amethyst to extreme heat because it can change the color of the stone. Also it is best to store your silver in the pouches that they come with. Tiffany also recommends that you use their polish cloth to clean their jewelry and they only cost $5 so why not? If your silver ever gets really tarnished the best thing to do is put Tiffany silver polish (also only $5) on a soft cloth and wipe it down. You will see all the tarnish come off onto the cloth, then rinse with water and dry with a blow dryer.

When I've bought silver jewelry at Tiffany for my daughters, I ask that they include a silver polishing cloth, and they do, at no charge. They work very well at polishing the jewelry.

I have the Tiffany polishing cloths and liquid cleaner. I use them as needed for my silver pieces. But really, nothing beats having Tiffany's clean it for you. They always come back looking better than new!

Not sure if it's all Tiffany stores, but I just go to my local one and for 5 bucks they clean my jewelry per piece. I would rather do that then screw it up myself (since I have the tendency to do that!). So I would for sure ask your local Tiffany & Co store.

Its possible that some stores dont charge. The 5th ave store only does diamond rings for free. All silver there is a charge. Its great that you can wait for it to be done though.

I bought both the silver polish cloth and the silver polish spray from Tiffany. I have to say the spray is amazing!!! They are very shiny just like new except the scratches. Recommend any buy the spray.
