Momo, it had something to do with Varna's proportions, he was pretty stubborn about keeping his lotus design since this was a ring that he designed for his wife on their 25th anniversary and a thin shank was going to change that look. As a matter of fact, this is actually the third ring they did for me, I never saw #2 because both jeweler and Varna himself didn't like it. Anyway, I saw the 1ct sample and wanted the shank of my ring to look like that, but because I have a bigger stone, Varna made my shank a little too thick. When I went back to tell them I really just love the sample ring, they tried to change the prongs on that ring to fit my ring but both jeweler and Varna said the prongs weren't strong enough plus the proportion really wasn't right. So finally they made a third attempt and I think the thickness of the shank of my final ring is a compromise, somewhat in between 1 and 2, which is why it took so long, but I was pretty impressed by Varna.
Couldn't agree more, it was definitely the prongs that made me wanted the setting.
