My more than a decade old “non-luxury” watch

Your Tissot is beautiful @Mentha and great to hear how well it’s served you for 11 years! Have you had it serviced within that time?

I know here on tPF most watch threads are about Rolex and Cartier, but if you check an actual watch aficionados forum like watchuseek, Tissot is very highly regarded as well as many other “mid” brands like Longines, Rado, Mido and Hamilton. Japanese brands Seiko and Casio are also highly viewed in the watch community.

Imho, at a certain price point you’re paying more for the name than the beauty and function of a watch. Well, I guess that’s true for purses too :P! But I’ll choose a well-made product at a reasonable price over an overblown expensive item every time. When I was considering my first automatic a few months ago, Tissot was on my shortlist and I ended up with a Longines.

spot on @foxgal, true the brands you mention are great bang for the buck and very well regarded. Frederique constant is another great brand, though priced more. as you say people are paying for the fashion element  . same here, when it comes to watches I am more for solidity and quality for the price though. Longines is a great brand again, I love the conquest series

That’s what mine is - a conquest classic auto. Very similar look to your Tissot but smaller, only 29 mm.

Interesting thread! I love the photos.
I also have a ‘less known’ brand watch that I have owned and loved for many years- an automatic Rado white ceramic - and to be honest I find it very beautiful and fashionable indeed.
I am really at a loss to explain why these brands are not more widely loved and accepted in ‘fashionable’ circles. It has to come down to the CONSPICUOUS in conspicuous consumption as I cannot think of any other reason??
Eta: ugh! Pesky phone typos!

Beautiful Rado, and your bracelet  ! ITA about “conspicuous”. Personally I much prefer under-the-radar quality!

well, here on the PF a lot of the members really love expensive designer stuff - like Tiffany for jewelry...just the nature of the beast I guess

It’s been more than 10+ years since I got on TPF. I had a couple of cheaper watches and no clue about watches then.
I made my first “decent” watch purchase after joining here and learning so much about watches and jewellery, I couldn’t afford any luxury watches so went for Tissot which is a solid brand, an automatic and something classic and minimalist, which is my style. It is actually a men’s watch and 36mm dial is great as I age.
It is 11 yrs old now and still as good as new after regular wear and banging around.
I feel that sometimes it seems like we just notice the super luxury watches and bags on this forum (I have a few high end bags though not watches) so thought I will share my well worn one which has stood up so well

very nice....and I imagine service is less expensive than on a Rolex?

Yeah I’m part of that myself I love my ridiculously expensive and recognisable bags, I pay, in spite of myself because I love their image, their marketing, their new, new, new. And expense is part of the desire unfortunately.
The irony is that these huge, huge luxury companies with major marketing budgets are in many ways more ubiquitous than other brands. Fashionable girls in major cities across the globe will go for identical looks. I guess that is part of the charm - being part of the desired group. Also knowing that these massive companies affect aesthetics in lower tiers of fashion as well. So buying ‘an original’ not a spin-off.
But Rado, Longines, Seiko , Tissot - these brands are themselves huge and respected, we are hardly slumming it by loving these brands.
And I don’t see my watch as a cheap wannabe copy of another more fashionable brand either.

this a great looking watch and looks lovely with the bracelet, thanks for sharing, rado is another great brand which is not too in your face. True, I guess it is about conspicous consumption and also most people buy brands because they expect them to be "visible and recognisable".
