It’s been more than 10+ years since I got on TPF. I had a couple of cheaper watches and no clue about watches then.
I made my first “decent” watch purchase after joining here and learning so much about watches and jewellery, I couldn’t afford any luxury watches so went for Tissot which is a solid brand, an automatic and something classic and minimalist, which is my style. It is actually a men’s watch and 36mm dial is great as I age.
It is 11 yrs old now and still as good as new after regular wear and banging around.
I feel that sometimes it seems like we just notice the super luxury watches and bags on this forum (I have a few high end bags though not watches) so thought I will share my well worn one which has stood up so well

Your Tissot is beautiful @Mentha and great to hear how well it’s served you for 11 years! Have you had it serviced within that time?

I know here on tPF most watch threads are about Rolex and Cartier, but if you check an actual watch aficionados forum like watchuseek, Tissot is very highly regarded as well as many other “mid” brands like Longines, Rado, Mido and Hamilton. Japanese brands Seiko and Casio are also highly viewed in the watch community.

Imho, at a certain price point you’re paying more for the name than the beauty and function of a watch. Well, I guess that’s true for purses too :P! But I’ll choose a well-made product at a reasonable price over an overblown expensive item every time. When I was considering my first automatic a few months ago, Tissot was on my shortlist and I ended up with a Longines.

spot on @foxgal, true the brands you mention are great bang for the buck and very well regarded. Frederique constant is another great brand, though priced more. as you say people are paying for the fashion element  . same here, when it comes to watches I am more for solidity and quality for the price though. Longines is a great brand again, I love the conquest series
