What on earth was he doing with it, did he take it off your porch because he thought it belonged to the previous owners, and hoping to keep it? It's not addressed to him, yet he opens it himself? Wouldn't a driver license or ID settled it instead? That's a lot of nerve. I'd be wary around this neighbor in the future. weird.
Yeah I am very nervous with packages now. I didn't say much because he is much older and didn't want to upset him too much since he did give me the package. But in my opinion there was intent to keep it since he opened and was hesitant to give it to me.
Maybe he planned to give it to a niece or grandaughter for christmas. That's theft. Either way it's not right to open someone else's mail and hesitate to give it back. Opening other people mail is STILL illegal. It had your name on it, what was his issue??
Lol yeah it definitely was his intent. It's sad but we know we have to be careful of these neighbors. No matter what area there are thieves everywhere b/c this is a "nice area".
It's sometimes the person you least expect. My former next-door neighbor's mother would come stay with her quite a bit. She was older and dressed very conservatively and looked exactly like a grandma. Who would suspect her? Then a couple of things disappeared. I had no reason to suspect her -- until I asked if she'd noticed any strange cars in the driveway, as I'd had a couple of packages stolen from the side door. You would not believe how weird she got. Two days later, my package mysteriously appeared -- it had been opened, gone through, the items inside opened and gone through, and it looked like the outside box had some stains on it like it had been in the trash. Couldn't prove anything but kept everything locked at all times after that.
A couple of years later, the neighbor had moved. I was watching the news and they had a story about a woman whose iPad was stolen from a local Panera when she got up to use the ladies room -- and the video of the thief looked EXACTLY like my former neighbor's mother! I don't know if it was but honestly, how many 60-ish lady thieves are out there in a relatively small area?

WOW.....probably NOT a coincidence that the thief favored your neighbors mom. Nowadays you have to look at everyone with one eyebrow raised. People will steal the stink of poop!! It's not just the weird guy in the dark parking lot anymore. We have a theft ring in our neighborhood walmart. They work together an steal purses out of baskets, do a handoff and get away everytime because you can't pinpoint who has the purse. My daughters mazda needed to go to the dealer and someone stole the ashtray(she keeps change in it). Everybody just shrugged their shoulders about it. Oh well. Now I remove anything thing of value out of my truck when I go to bmw. They are shifty too. Tried to rip me off on a replacement key once. Told me I needed a new IGNITION, $$$ when they ordered the wrong key, even got nasty with me. I had to send my hubby. He does not take crap off anyone except me.
Haha I love that "he doesn't take crap off anyone but me" isn't that the truth. I decided to talk to the neighbor bc the fiancée would have not been nice about him opening my package, he even wanted to say something but I told him he is old and no need to frighten him. So true that you never know who can be a thief there is no look to it, bad people everywhere unfortunately! OP hopefully you got everything figured out, I dislike very much (don't use hate) a thief!
Update: I have the bag now. UPS said it was delivered a week before it I inquired about it. Then about 5 days later, it magically shows up on my door. It was the original order, because I ordered it from a Macys store in Seattle while on business as a pre-friends and family. Macys did not resend it because the card of the SA was stapled to the bag and the receipt showed the date I ordered with a "Do not ship til Dec 3rd" on it.
So I am thinking either UPS was wrong, someone either stole it or got a conscience or perhaps it was delivered to a neighbor by mistake and they brought it back. Bottom line is the bag is back and I am happy! I wanted to post a pic but this bag does not photograph well on my camera and shows too dark, almost blue. IRL it is not that at all. And I have received tons of compliments on it from strangers and SAs while out shopping
