Thank you yinnie. I am trying not to get very carried away because the smell could come back, but for now, even if it does, there is no way that it can ever get as bad as it did.

I honestly think that it's because of all the things I did to it: Crumbled up loose paper, 3-4 dryer sheets, sock filled with charcoal, sock filled with coffee beans, fresh air, cold air, placing it in the freezer, and lastly placing baking soda in it. With each new tactic, it got slightly better, but the BS was amazing.

Lots of tips, but I sincerely hope you will never have to use any of them!

See, this is when I sing the praises of caviar. Last week my 1 year old got horrendously sick all over me and my jumbo. I ended up chucking my jacket, but clearly that wasn't an option with my bag. Since I know not everyone here is a mom (and is used to this kind of graphic display of bodily processes) I won't get into the details, but I had no choice but to run the handle and the worst parts of the bag under a faucet, and wiped down the rest with soap and water first, and then with a bleach wipe. I don't know that I'd be brave enough to do that with lambskin.

Absolutely agree Green97.
A gf of mine bought a brand new gold lambskin chanel last year and within a week of using it, the blue color of her denim jeans had rubbed off on the bag. She was so, understandably, upset. She took it back to Chanel and they said that discoloration, especially with lambskin, is a possibility. I felt so bad for her.

I've worn my caviar with everything and anything and not a single problem.
Glad to hear your bag was okay, especially after such traumatic occurrences. I can't believe you used soap or a bleach wipe! I would have just wiped it clean, but I can understand why you had to used them.

PS. Periodically, I keep smelling my bag just to make sure I'm not dreaming! My bf thinks I'm nuts! :)

For future references (but like I said before, I sincerely hope you will never have/buy a smelly bag and have to "fix" it) the two best tricks that worked is the crumpling up a dryer sheet in a ball and wrapping loose paper around it and crumpling it up also and leaving it in the bag for a few days. The other great trick was the two open boxes of baking soda in a box, disposing some in a ziploc baggie and leaving it open on the inside of the purse, and closing the box for a few days. The freezer thing was good but I don't think I did it long enough because I started to get nervous with my baby next to the cold meats! ha

^ I am going to save this post in case I ever buy a 'smelly' vintage bag. Your thread has very helpful tips! I am so happy that it all worked out for you. I cannot stand sellers that don't disclose odors to buyers - it is a very shady and dishonest practice. Many people like myself are very sensitive to certain scents and smells.

Yeah! That is fab news!!!!!!!!
UPDATE:

I have returned from my amazing trip to Santa Ynez wineries (Central Cali wineries, approx. 2 hours away from LA and I highly recommend going there; msg me for recommendations) and last I posted I had put my purse in a box with baking soda. As soon as we parked, I ran into the house and opened the box carefully.

I am SO SO SO happy to report that the smell is starting to disappear! When I got it it reeked and I couldn't even hold it. Now, after countless strategies and plans, it is about 80% better. There is still a trace of the smell but it has improved ten fold.

I am so happy! I am leaving it in the box for a few more days and have moved the boxes of baking soda around and inside of different pockets. I think that in a few days, it will be much better. I am thinking of just storing it in this box even after use.

YAYYYYY!!!!! :woohoo::yahoo::tup::sunnies:dothewave:
(there aren't enough emoticons to convey my happiness right now!)

I don't know if this will make a difference, but my mum has mentioned that newspaper is very good at soaking up odours. She used to rant about how it worked miracles getting rid of the smell from my brother's soccer and hockey boots after playing in the rain.

Might be worth giving it a shot in addition to what you're already doing.
