I'm a military brat, my boyfriend is military, and I've learned - and you probably already know this - anything you love, move yourself! But you can't exactly drive a u-haul from Hawaii, can you? I'd pack 'em, ship 'em, then keep my two or three most beloved/expensive purses in my carry-on. I put them in dustbags, fill them with underwear and socks and rolled shirts, then pack them in the bag. You don't lose too much space and you get to keep your bags on you.
I'm going to use this tip when I go on vacation. DH says I can only take one bag, but with this method, I bet I can take 3 or 4...

I'm moving in a few months too and really appreciate this tip! I think this is exactly how I will pack them. We're planning on getting a pod so hopefully that will help with theft but for my favorite purses I will probably just put them in the car with me. Though that will get full fast!

I just had to say - I love your avatar - it always makes me smile. :graucho:

Pack them in a box with wrap, etc and tape the box and label it "bedding/towels" on the side. If they are wrapped in bedding and towels, no one will dig or try to snatch it, and they are protected. I would put them in boxes and not with you on the plane....I've done the mainland -Hawaii move and you want to avoid having to carry too much, it is a stressful day anyway. Take jewelry, pack purses. Good luck!

I feel like I'd trust UPS way less than my movers... it doesn't take long to look around various forums and find tons of stories of lost packages, nondeliveries, damages...

No my husband is (hopefully) going to be getting medically retired from the Marine Corps. We'll be moving to a relatively small city about 45 minutes east of Jackson.

I'm thinking it will be really expensive to ship everything via UPS over to the mainland, but it might be worth it for peace of mind. or I could start early and do a few at a time. LOL

Oh, okay. I wuz just wondering since I'm not far from Keesler and there's an outlet not too far away either. :graucho:

Hmmm. Do you have a place to ship them too? I might do the 'one box full at a time' method. It wouldn't cost so terribly much too ship each time, but the best thing is that if a box is lost / damaged, not ALL of your collection is in there. Heck, I'd probably keep a few of the best ones and fly them home with me!

Or, I might pick out my best / favorite pieces and ship them via UPS or FedEx and the others that weren't my favorites or are easily replaced, just let the movers do their job......and have plenty of photos of the bags and any other valuables that they are packing up!

In the next six months or so, we will be moving from Oahu to Mississippi. I am unsure of how to move my bounty of purses back to the mainland from here.

Being that we are military, we will have professional movers packing up our stuff and shipping it for us, but military movers haven't always been the most trustworthy in the history of military moves, so I'm not sure I can trust them to move my purses and not "lose" them. If I DO let them pack them up, how can I best ensure they get there safely, not just GET there, but get there unsquished, but all nice and pretty and not damaged?

Should I just bite the bullet and have them all shipped via UPS? That will get expensive seeing as how I have close to 50 or 60 purses at this point, if I don't sell any before I leave.

Any suggestions from any people that have moved before? With professional moving companies, etc?
When we moved from Turkey to San Antonio, I mailed my handbags to my sister so I wouldn't have to deal with the movers.

I have just moved from NY to London.
I dont have such large collection as some, but I do have quite many.

I stuffed them with socks, rolled shirts, pillowcases etc, put them in dust bags and tried to distribute them amog other stuff, so no more than 1-2 purse per box.
They went on the cargo container ship and arrived in London about 6 weeks later in excellent condition. No moisture issues at all.

I would say if you stuff them and put them in dust bags you are good to let the movers pack it just like other fragile items.

I did not bring any Coach purses with me as the luggage limits are quite strict and I had to bring most of my work wardrobe. I only brought my Vera Bradley bag as they are more practical, foldable, and lighweight and dont need to be babied.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will likely bring my favorite bags with me on the plane, and then let the other ones get packed up (or use the suggestion of packing them up among the towels and bedding, GREAT idea!)
