In the next six months or so, we will be moving from Oahu to Mississippi. I am unsure of how to move my bounty of purses back to the mainland from here.

Being that we are military, we will have professional movers packing up our stuff and shipping it for us, but military movers haven't always been the most trustworthy in the history of military moves, so I'm not sure I can trust them to move my purses and not "lose" them. If I DO let them pack them up, how can I best ensure they get there safely, not just GET there, but get there unsquished, but all nice and pretty and not damaged?

Should I just bite the bullet and have them all shipped via UPS? That will get expensive seeing as how I have close to 50 or 60 purses at this point, if I don't sell any before I leave.

Any suggestions from any people that have moved before? With professional moving companies, etc?

When we've moved before, with professional movers, they said anything you pack yourself s unnsured. I don't know if that is the case with the military movers or not.

Hmm, that's a good question, I don't know if it would be uninsured or not if I pack them myself. Most of the time, even if you pack something yourself, the movers will unpack it and repack it anyway. So I'm not sure if it would even matter. I would put them all in, like tupperware boxes, but it would take about 3 weeks to a month for them to ship our stuff back to the mainland and I don't want any moisture building up and ruining the leather.

Sorry, no help here with the moving, but I have a question......are you being stationed at Keesler in Biloxi?

Can you stuff them, wrap them in a thin layer of bubble wrap or cushion-y material, put them in the dust bags and tie them up? Inventory and document everything and then let the movers pack them? It wouldn't help with the possibility of "loss" but it would give maximum insurance against damage due to improper packing.

ETA: Or even buy a bunch if generic dust bags if you don't want to advertise brands...

I don't think these are the kinds of things that get "lost" in a move. I'd be worried about my jewelry. Maybe you could ship the most valuable ones yourself. For the others, can't you get some of those moisture-absorbing packets and put them inside your purses before they get packed up?

I didn't have a purse collection the last time we moved. I had jewelry missing, and there were a few things that didn't fit on the truck that were supposed to come along later but never did.

When I moved long distance, the jewelry came in the car with me. And I sent two huge insured boxes via UPS with all my purses. It was worth it to me to ensure their safety. We lost small items off the moving truck, like our power drill, but it was replaceable.

No my husband is (hopefully) going to be getting medically retired from the Marine Corps. We'll be moving to a relatively small city about 45 minutes east of Jackson.

I'm thinking it will be really expensive to ship everything via UPS over to the mainland, but it might be worth it for peace of mind. or I could start early and do a few at a time. LOL

I'm moving in a few months too and really appreciate this tip! I think this is exactly how I will pack them. We're planning on getting a pod so hopefully that will help with theft but for my favorite purses I will probably just put them in the car with me. Though that will get full fast!

I'm a military brat, my boyfriend is military, and I've learned - and you probably already know this - anything you love, move yourself! But you can't exactly drive a u-haul from Hawaii, can you? I'd pack 'em, ship 'em, then keep my two or three most beloved/expensive purses in my carry-on. I put them in dustbags, fill them with underwear and socks and rolled shirts, then pack them in the bag. You don't lose too much space and you get to keep your bags on you.

Yeah, I had planned on carrying my Chanel with me on my carry on, for sure. Jeez it's going to be expensive to ship all these purses back to the mainland! :faint:

But less than the cost of replacing them - moving insurance rarely ever pays retail - and probably very much worth the cost in peace of mind alone.

And, of course, you could always send them to my house, if that would make you feel more comfortable...

Having moved about 60 bags plus accessories from Maine to Sydney, Australia - and I let my hubby do the packing! Not sure how your belongings will be transported, but ours were shipped via container cargo. Hubby made sure every bag was properly stuffed, in it's dust bag, packed 5 to a carton and the carton stuffed with extra packing material so nothing got squished. We had an entire pallet (no, not my bags hahahah!) and that pallet got shrinkwrapped... the whole thing got delivered to Australia about 6 weeks later! Not a thing was awry. I DID however, take 5 of my most favorite babies in my personal luggage (along with my jewerly and photo albums!) but everything was hunky dory.

If the movers have to pack stuff to make sure you're insured, just stuff the bags and put 'em in the dustbags, and then let them at it. Do you put inventory of contents on each box?
