I had ten bags that I refused to do without - and yes, I discarded the boxes. Some of my evening bags were stuffers for my larger bags... Sort of russian nesting doll look.

Actually, because I love vintage, many of them parted ways with their original boxes decades before they came into my life.

Although when it comes to packing for flight - I've always been impressed by one of the members of the Hermes forum, robee. In her travel reveals, she somehow manages to fit a massive stack of boxes - packed into her suitcase. I'm always amazed.

Oh my god. You are bringing back nightmares!

Five years ago I moved from New York to the west coast. It was a headache. I flew, started my job, and then flew back three weeks later to supervise packing everything. I then flew back while my stuff drove.
When I first few west, my carryon suitcase had my jewelry box, my absolute-favorite-would-be-crushed-if-anything-happened bags, and my flatware. That's it. No clothes. My makeup was in my "personal items" along with my favorite perfumes. In my checked "luggage" I wrapped my china and crystal in my clothes (panties and socks stuffed inside the stemware, paints and blouses wrapped around the dishes and glasses) I had a couple of pairs of shoes in my bag, and what scarves I didn't have adorning my person were in a pocket of my suitcase.

And of course, I was stopped by security. And of course, they had to inspect my bag. And lift out every handbag for everyone bored in the security line. They tried to confiscate my flatware, but when I told the the value, they finally compromised and surrendered my suitcase to a stewardess, who didn't give the bag to me until after we landed.
And when I arrived, and opened my checked luggage, they had a "your bag has been inspected notice" I often wonder how the TSA people feel about my underwear.

In short - frustrating, but mildly amusing in retrospect

Wow that's quite an adventure! I love that TSA is so worried that you're carrying on butter knives solidly packed into your carry on... ooo you're such a threat *sigh* flying restrictions drive me NUTSO these days, sorry - just had to vent

Omg Vintage Leather, that sounds crazy! I think the TSA thinks we're all nuts when we travel, especially with all of our bags and shoes. Now I'm dreading my trip to Cali in March- I know I'll have a ton of bags!

Last year, my mom and I flew to Knoxville to meet up with my dad and brother (they were already down there with their Boy Scout troop for camp, and they were gonna bring the guys to Pigeon Forge for a week), so my dad had our giant suitcase in his car, so all we had to bring were carryons with cosmetics, medicine, and hair stuff. Well the guy actually stopped the x-ray thing as my carryon with the hair straightener (and I think shoes) went through, and ran it again, lol.

Hey,
Moving when you're a student is awful! Nevermind that I'm out of the US at the moment, deciding what to accessories to bring with me to my new country was hard enough!

Before I left, however, I shipped a box of Vintage purses, and modern Dooney/Coach to my parents'. I was into Vintage then, and am still into it now, and have frequented the stores in my city to the point that by owners know what I'm looking for.

In addition to Art Deco bags, I love '60s coats, and moving from an apartment to the dorms in a month is going to be difficult! The bags can be stacked, but I don't want to take forever to move. There's enough storage space in th dorms, but still...And then I have to move around over the summer and in September will be in yet another city for study abroad. Sometimes I wish I were finished with school so I could settle down already. There will be time for that, I'm sure, but the next 6 months are gonna be interesting!

I can just imagine what it's going to like flying international with everything. I have 2 backpacks, and can put the bags in one, and have books in the other...with my laptop...I might need to downsize again...Though it would be interesting to explain why I have x handbags made of y in my backpack, to non-native English speaking Customs/airport people...

ugh, i had to move once, and i packed all my bags into a huge box and onto the uhaul from there. it wasn't too bad, but i definitely was nervous throughout. i didn't want anything to happen to my babies!!

One of my favorite coats "disappeared" when I stored it in the dorms - a gorgeous vintage red cashmere. It still breaks my heart - I can fully understand why you are concerned.

But as for traveling abroad - I would limit the number of bags you bring with you - just take 2-3 workhorses, and ship the rest to your parents. That way, you have a brilliant excuse to find vintage international bags! :yahoo:

I'm moving back to my home country end of this month after 3 years in Europe. I'm still trying to figure out how to get my bags (7 of them) home (on a 12 hour flight!) safely without having to ship any of them. Unfortunately there's shoes to consider as well, there's maybe 15 pairs:D. Will update once I decide on something.

im moving from the us to italy soon and im scared to death about moving my bags! i will be leaving a lot of them at home with my mom sadly. too worried about them getting messed up!

Moving is hard!! I've moved cross country four years in a row... My boxes are almost all tissue paper. The movers think I'm crazy until I explain the shoes are worth as much as the painting so please wrap them well!!!! Hahaha

Yeah...and imagine moving to another country, lol! Had to do that once and I'm terrified at the prospect of doing it again.

I carried my bags in carry on spread out across the family. Stressful!

LOL When I moved from one city to another, I had 3 big boxes full of bags and SLG. I kept them close to myself - they didn't travel on the truck with my other stuff, but in my BF's car. And when a friend helping me asked why, I just told her "This box is worth 5,000 € and that one....OMG I just realised where ALL MY MONEY IS!". It was kind of an eye-opening moment.
