For that price point, how about making a handmade gift certificate for a sisters- shopping day with brunch or lunch or cocktails and $X,xxx toward a bag of her choice?
Anyone who buys bags at this price point (I do) has some well-developed preferences and probably a secret list of bags (or bag features) she covets. As in: I really want a bag with X right now! She also has a well-refined and mostly private way of making these decisions about a new bag. Choosing a bag is (and should be) a very intimate and personal experience for the person who will live with that bag: what features work best for her? What gaps would she like to fill in her collection? What bag might fit the life she has *right now*? What new features or colors or textures or brands might she want to try out?
Others will seldom know those. If a loved one wanted to gift me with a bag in this price range, I would be overwhelmed by their generosity- and to help them get their money's worth with such a gift, I would also want to have a have a hand in choosing. There is more to it than I would want any loved one to know. As a bag-addict, I don't share my bag thoughts, obsessions, or preferences much (except with my fellow addicts here). For someone else to choose a bag for me would feel too personal- like choosing my underwear. If you shop together, you as the gift-giver could be certain that she would love and use your gift.
For a loved one to offer to take me bag shopping would be wonderful: a loving and personal gift of a bag- yet more important and special would be the gift of time and the experience of shopping together - and the warm fuzzy memories of that time every time I use the bag we bought together.
Your're a thoughtful and generous sister- she's lucky to have you!
