I am so shocked that I am speechless... so I was reading Vice Magazine articles & one of them was about shoplifting communities online. I followed the link, which brought me to a group of Tumblr blogs being run mostly by teenage girls and women in their early 20s. These shoplifters are not just nicking a lipstick here or a nail polish there- they steal thousands of dollars' worth merchandise, some of them in one day, some of them with their mothers! (What the hell kind of trashy family do they have?!)

Anyway the reason why I brought this here is because I kept seeing the mention of MK Selma as the perfect "lifting" bag. Seriously if they don't already have it, it seems like it is their goal to obtain one- almost every single one of them. It seems that one of the reasons is it is structured so it looks the same empty as it does full, and it fits a lot of stuff...

Then this girl's post especially caught my attention:

How she reported the purse as missing and got a refund- I imagine many of us who frequent eBay subforum here would recognize the pattern. At first I only saw the part where she reported it stolen/missing, worried that it might have been an eBay auctio, now that I see the full post (as shown above) I can see that she pulled the fraud on MK website. BUT all of these people learn from each other, sharing tips and tricks, AND a lot of them use eBay/Poshmark/etc to sell their stolen merchandise (which is why they steal 10+ Urban Decay Naked palettes) so if one of them hasn't pulled a fast one from a tPFer selling a purse, I feel like it might just be a matter of time... if they don't steal a tPFer's purse outright. It's not like they seem to feel guilty about much...

(I saw one blogger advising how to scam elderly & another inquiring how to defraud Chinese eBay sellers. 'Nuff said.)

Just in case this thread is shown as another MK bashing thread- while I don't own an MK purse yet, a Selma in neon yellow is on my purse wish list. I think that's why it pisses me off even more actually...

Wow! Not only are they committing a crime, but they are bragging about it. I'm just so amazed at how many people do this and think nothing if it... And to scam the elderly... All I can say is God sees all.

Very little surprises me, about what people do.
Maybe have seen too much.

If these masterminds post records of crimes online, a few things might shock them in future. ;)

Does not ruin your choice of bag, op.
People do evil stuff. The items involved are not evil.
When I buy knives, no one jumps to bizarre assumption, "She's a serial killer!" Hopefully. :D
Keep heart. Keep liking mk selma. :)

That is very true remainsilly. I still live Louis Vuitton and it's faked all the time. Like what you want to. Everyone is different with different tastes. And you're right about the "masterminds" posting this stuff. Not too smart. People like that like to think they're geniuses. Lol.

Reading the shoplifter/fraudster/criminal's post made my stomach lurch. Who on earth raised this kid and how did they not manage to beat any sense or the least bit of decency into her head?
It's not really a surprise that this happens, though; I worked in one of Finland's most notorious suburbs for more than 3 yrs and saw pretty much everything imaginable and even a few things that were completely beyond imagination. Still, this makes me shudder.

Now that I think of it, Selma is an ideal purse for a shoplifter; structured and it has openings on the top so it's easy to drop stuff in. And us honest customers end up paying for each and every thing that ends up in these criminals' Selmas...

So sad, I guess my question is why these websites would allow such carp on there...can't they just deactivate accounts where loads of people are admitting to breaking the law?

My dh has been telling me for years how many items on sites such as ebay are stolen. Probably quite true but how would one know?

I know I mentioned it in the OP, but I saw several talk about how they lift WITH their mothers. One went into great details about it, how they were such a great team bc they didn't look as suspicious & things that she's not able to "detag" her mother buys... reading that I just felt like that said it all about the kind of family some of these girls must be raised in...

Another hilarious thing I saw. Criminal sisterhood*, apparently...

*99% of these "lifters" seem to be women, unfortunately :( Not that men don't steal- obv they do- perhaps they just don't feel the need to form an online community and show off their "hauls" online.

Isn't there some kind of retail association that can investigate these leads?

Doesn't e bay have an interest in investigating or a responsibility to mitigate illegal activity on their site?

Read the link you posted, ugh. This is a reason why merchandise keeps costing us more.. I would like to say i am shocked to see a community based on criminal acts, but i am not. Sad.

Check out this girl. Over $47,700 "saved" (terminology they use) should def put her in felony category...

http://liftliketheresnolp.tumblr.com/

One of the "lifters" was obviously a Korean girl- she had a few thousands "saved" and was into it enough that she carried a hook and a magnet for "detagging" purpose. And since I am also Korean it made me want to... I don't know. Just reach across the screen and shake her. I almost registered just so that I could write to her. That you can have ALL this and MUCH MORE if you worked at it. But I knew it wouldn't get through her head. Only a minority of them seem to get scared off of it after getting caught. The rest of them- if they are under 18 they're getting it erased once 18 anyway so they don't care, if they are over you already got a record now so what's one more? One said she actually got more into it after she got caught :censor:

What's scary is some of these girls seem to come from affluent families too. If I had a daughter like this... ugh!
