"Handbags are a natural evolution for us," says Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs. "This feels like exactly the right moment to introduce them. The label was built on a fundamental belief in the value of luxury, and now, more than ever, we're speaking the same language as our customers. They want quality and luxury expressed in contemporary shapes."
Jacobs, of course, is known for creating clothes that combine sophistication and playfulness, under his own name and for Louis Vuitton, and his new collection retains this signature, mixing a sleek practicality with a citified air. Some of its details are reminiscent of the Sixties, particularly the whimsical oversized hardware -- big zippers and locks.
"The collection is about taking things that are quite classic and playing around with the proportions," the designer says. "I like unexpected combinations, like an elongated bag with a very fine strap or a small one with an oversize buckle."
Styles, in fact, include a silhouette shaped like a loaf of bread, a chic version of a doctor's bag, a slouchy saddle bag, rectangular shoulder bags and smaller bracelet clutches with demure wrist handles.
There is also an array of minibags, among them tiny versions of ladylike structured bags. The collection is primarily done in lush calfskin in black, sienna, royal blue or oxblood tones. Several pieces, however, will also be available in alligator in beige, saffron, bordeaux or pink, and a poppy-print patent leather. It's all being manufactured in European factories owned by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Don't know whether or not her time recollection was correct.... If it's correct, then she bought it in 1999, at a consignment store no less....
I don't know what season or style his first bag was.![]()
In 2000 Marc Jacobs launched its first handbag collection and opened a new store in San Francisco. Marc by Marc Jacobs was launched in a Spring/summer 2001 runway show. The new Marc line consists of more affordable edgy pieces for the masses. The Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marc Jacobs lines now include shoes, handbags, accessories and fragrances, as well as a Home Collection launched in 2003. In Spring 2005 Marc Jacobs launched a full line of eyewear as well as a watch collection designed together with Fossil.

ok here's what I found in the MJ bio:
the first handbag collection was released in 2000
this publicity photo of Sofia Coppola was part of the Fall 2000 ad campaign, therefore, one of the first MJ bags was the MULTI-POCKET
also, this is interior of the MJ store at 125 Maiden Lane, San Francisco taken in 2000, if you look closely you can see several styles with padlocks -- none of the bags with the buckles can be seen in this photo -- I think most of the earlier bags were made from that stiffer tumbled calf leather, leather lined and had pushlock pockets on the exterior -- the classic collection (as it would be later known), i.e., stella, sophia, cammie, etc were more than likely introduced during the 2001 season -- I could swear that somewhere I read that the venetia was his first design. maybe that's true, but if you look at that pic, there doesn't appear to be a venetia on display anywhere
