Don’t be too fast to make that decision. You have to be careful that the extra weight isn’t going to put too much strain on your joints, your knees and your back. It depends on what your structure is, what kind of shape you’re in. You can do more damage than good. I did this 20 years ago and I was still pretty young but because I have a few issues with my back it really made those worse.
True that wearing a weighted vest builds muscle and communicates that to your bones, improving density. But many exercises build muscle. Wearing a weighted vest while you’re on a treadmill seems like an easier solution because you’re doing two things at once, cardio plus muscle, but again you’re putting a ton of pressure on your vertebrae all of a sudden. Also, if your posture isn’t aligned well while you’re doing that, it makes it worse.
Thank you for this! I’ve been researching the benefits of weighted vests, and I haven’t seen a lot of comments/studies on this. I did try it - walking on the treadmill for 10 mins to start with a 8lb weighted vest from Amazon - and I have noticed my knees aching the following day! It probably won’t be doing any favors for my lower back as well which also aches from time to time. Thank you so much sharing your experience! People like you are the reason I still visit this forum.
I’ll be sticking with regular strength training. 🙂
