Max you’ll pay for jewelry

I've a matching set of Grisogono 'lightning'-shaped wg + blak/wht diamond earrings and ring. I wore them to my cousin's wedding, morning ceremony, then luncheon, then dancing +++++ till later and later. The earrings (post and clip) became more painful as the day turned to night. By the time the 'happy couple' hit the floor for the first dance, the earrings were killing me. I had to take them off.

10 years later I was still looking for the earrings. I'm sure somewhere on tPF I wrote I was resigned to the fact I'd lost them.

Last year, I found them again.

I even lost a Cartier lion ring my mother gave me. I wore it once, and then - no idea. There were times I thought perhaps I imagined that she gave it to me and lost my mind and not the ring.

I found that too, even more recently.

Moral of the tale, never give up looking, never give-up hope. You probably do what I do, put it somewhere so safe you end-up hiding it from yourself.

It doesn't matter how expensive or inexpensive things are, I absolutely hate losing/mislaying them.

Going to hope my cartier clash ring and necklace turn up from this post. I am not a klutz but I do not understand how jewelry and sunglasses elude me. I joke they grow legs because it doesn't make sense. I don't even have like a lot of pairs. I only had one ring yet managed to lose it...

Good luck 😁

My general rule has been that no more than 10% of my income goes to luxuries (including eating out, jewelry, handbags, holidays, hair care ect) and no one item is more than 4%

However, if I sell anything, budget-wise it is treated as free money, and can be applied with abandon to any particular project or desire.
Wow, 10% including eating out and holidays. In Europe it’s common to go on vacation 2-3 times per year and spend at least 10% of income. Vacations are an institution here 😁. Eating out is part of my eating budget so not included in luxuries.

4x your monthly income is feasible if it is a major occasion such as a milestone birthday, a promotion and so forth.
Also do you forecast being able to wear and enjoy the necklace on an ongoing basis, if so why not?
Good point, maybe i’ll wait till my next birthday to pull the trigger. The necklace isn’t going anywhere. I no longer want to have many pieces, just a few good ones I wear often so this one will be used again and again.

I guess, thinking about it, I don't buy anything that costs more than about 1 week of my take-home pay. Even that much makes me pause and is a rare occurrence.

I tend to look at things in terms of "what else can I buy with this money?" Unfortunately for my jewelry/watch/bag collection, other things almost always take precedence.

I would spend more on jewelry than bags though because it lasts longer. Bags wear out much faster and are therefore much harder for me to justify a high price tag.

I agree with @etoile de mer I sometimes will make a larger purchase for jewelry and cull back smaller purchases for jewelry. I have never really thought about the max I will spend on a piece of jewelry. With the economy I guess it depends on what my funds look like at a given time. I think for me and this comes with most purchases I do have a limit where I feel like something is too expensive even if I can afford it. When it comes to jewelry I have fun with fashion and nowadays you can get gemstones for really cheap. So I just have fun with it.

I guess it also depends on how often. I have my eye on a piece that is around 4-5 months of disposable income, but if I buy it, that would be my jewellery spending for the year, so I have to weigh up how much I want that particular piece.

Good to know i’m not the only one out there willing to spend 4X my monthly income in jewelry 😁. This year I’ve already bought a few pieces so the wise me will wait a few months till my birthday to pull the trigger. If I still like it I’ll buy it otherwise I’ll keep my money instead.

I think it just depends - if you’re on the higher income end, a few months pay could be a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a piece of jewelry even if you can afford it comfortably.

My personal preference is to keep my engagement ring as my most expensive piece of jewelry, but I know many others who don’t care about their ring as much and have incredible jewelry collections with pricey tennis bracelets, necklaces, earrings. The ring is already enough of a liability from an safety standpoint, I think I’d be anxious with six figure necklaces, earrings, etc
