Louis Vuitton Epi - why doesn't it always hold its value?

You're right - the journey begins with Monogram (my first was predictably a vintage MC Speedy 25) and simply evolves from there! New buyers are unlikely to be familiar with the Epi, but they've all seen the Monogram 1000x over. Makes sense to me.

A lot of it has to do with the subtlety of Epi leather. Many people buying LV want the status symbol of the bag-- IE Monogram, with the logo all over the place-- so they would rather buy preloved mono than Epi as it's not as glaringly LV to the untrained eye. Sad, too, because many of the leather pieces are truly beautiful.

Yep agree completely! Mono is def more recognizable regardless if that is the original print or not. I got my first Epi a couple weeks ago and it's not because I didn't like it before but I feel I wanted an understated bag for those times like school or meetings that's not so loud. Some of my friends didn't even realize it was LV and they still prefer the mono bags to take wherever. I think it also has to do with growth as a person/handbag lover as well. I do have my mono and damier bags but I also prefer the more subtle looks. Even my Chanel gets less stares than my LV! :roflmfao::roflmfao:

Totally agree!

I find on many consignment sites mono generally seems to go for a little more than the other canvas prints as well. A lot of people go for mono as their first LV, and buying from consignment/ private sellers also cuts out the wait time for patina to develop on the vachetta.

Sometimes a more understated bag is needed so Epi is more practical, but I still want the quality of an LV bag. :-)

Even if many people say "I buy pre-loved because I prefer older styles etc", it's pretty clear that a majority of people buy pre-loved because they can't afford (or don't want to pay) retail prices for a Louis Vuitton handbag. And there is nothing wrong with that. I recently bought a pochette Orsay for $325 on Yoogi's... it looks brand new... just because I did not want to shell 800 euros for it!!!

Anyway, I think a lot of people begin their LV journey with the monogram line. That's the most iconic - so that becomes the most desirable on the second-hand market.

Enjoy your Epi bags - I love them too!

I agree with this. One reason (other than price) that I buy pre-loved is because I'm less afraid to use them. I tend to baby my new items and they end up never seeing the light of day.

If you like something I wouldn't worry about the resale value too much. It's still a LV and those aware of the brand will still be interested if you do need to sell it. IMO the epi leather seems to hold up better against time than the vernis line.

+1 and if I buy something new, I never sell it as I am more attached. I like Epi because it seems to stand the test of time.

My first designer bag was LV in Red Epi leather as my day to day bag. Chosen Epi because I see too much mono where I stay. Now I'm starting to collect a few mono n Damier range for rough use when traveling, Soooo....I would rather buy preloved! After all I will only be using them 2/3 times a year. I know I'm not the only one, my relatives n friends r buying preloved LV Mono/Damier for the same reason. They r just more durable for rough use.

From what I've read in forum, some new LV fans chose Mono because they are concern about wear n tear. That could also be the reason why Mono/damier has better resale value. Not just for LV status symbol I guess.

I totally agree. When I first started purchasing LV in more early twenties, I was only interested in mono. Then I ventured into damier ebene for the ease of care esp having babies. Now I am venturing into epi for the understated elegance. I love LV but don't always want to carry a bag that screams LV.

That bag is so gorgeous!

Thank you! I never get tired of looking at it. I saw one in the Waterside boutique the other day when I was carrying my mon monogram and the manager was about to pull it down when I told her I already had one  now I need it in more colours! I had to snap up the fuchsia pochette last week when I stumbled into it. I'm becoming Epiobsessed!!

How'd you get the Epi luggage tag? A SA told me they were discontinued because there were no longer any Epi pieces that used luggage tags? That was a lucky find!

One of my SAs, store manager in one of the Miami boutiques, keeps them in stock. They're not discontinued. :flowers: he can order them in any colour but keeps several in stock because people love them. He says they're considered repair parts now, but are easily order-able. I picked up this one and a cyan and he's ordering me a purple  they're $70.

I use luggage tags for wedding gifts with the new couple's initials heat stamped :-) the only luggage tags they've discontinued are the miniature ones. If you want his name and the boutique so you can get one or two, PM me :)
