For years I had no idea that this could happen but my sister in law with electronic and non jewelry items had something stolen out of her checked in suitcase in the US. Unfortunately it has made me paranoid about checking anything and like others on the chain, I just wear pieces that will go with the majority of my outfits on vacation and do not check anything in my luggage. Your husband is a great guy.
I became paranoid about checked in baggage after my first travel from Europe to NYC and I brought a block of cigarettes for my friends. They wanted specific one from their home country as a souvenir and it was the only one thing stolen from my checked in baggage. Lol. I didn’t have any valuables back then. Only regular clothes and shoes. But I was shocked that people can stole even cigarettes.

One more negative experience my husband and I had a few years later, we stayed at Hilton hotel in Baltimore, MD next to airport. We had a 6am flight, so we woke up around 3.30-4am and still half asleep went to airport. Inside airport after we went though all security my husband realized he forgot his watch on the night stand at the hotel room. (Luckily it was watch cost around $1000 not crazy expensive) we called front desk and explained we forgot watch and asked if someone can go take it and keep it for 4 days until we came back. The hotel called back 5 mins later and said the guy who checked the room didn’t find any watch. I mean common, it was 100% there.
