Looking for Law School Bag

Agree with all of the above comments - I would suggest a canvas/nylon backpack or messenger bag (or a tote if you carry a separately laptop bag on the other shoulder).
Law textbooks are very heavy, and the need for a laptop is guaranteed. You will also need to factor in travelling between classes, ancient library books that you may need to take home once in a while, crowded lecture theatres and libraries where your bag will have to sit on the floor (and at desperate times, both you and your bag will be on the floor) etc.

Tumi makes some nice looking sturdy totes that could handle you computer and books. I’d also have to agree with other on a Longchamp nylon bag. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. Not very expensive. Good Luck Counselor!

Your comment about ancient library books cracked me up. I graduated law school in the mid-90s, back when WestLaw and Lexis were first starting up. It was nothing but ancient books for us.

FWIW, I used a Le Sportsac to lug my books back then. All of the advice to go with something lightweight and waterproof is spot on but if I were a student now, it would be eBooks all the way. My old lady back would be a lot less achy now.

Good luck in school to all of you!

I graduated law school in 2015 and I had a regular backpack and a Longchamp tote. The backpack doesn't look fancy but sometimes you just need a workhorse to carry all the stuff. Whenever I used the tote, I had to a carry a couple of books or heavier items in my arms so my shoulder doesn't get too sore.

I guarantee that you will need to carry a laptop and several heavy casebooks, so go for something practical. If you truly want something nicer, then just wait a couple of weeks. By then you will know what's good and what's not. Or you can just a nice bag for outside of school.

Now that I'm working, I like the Givenchy Antigona in medium... but that's only because I can fit my lunch, cardigan, maybe shoes, and an occasional file or laptop. I would never consider using it for law school.
Another vote for the Longchamp tote. I purchased mine straight from the website in 2005, and was able to customize it a bit (super large size, black with a brown stripe, long handles, gold hardware)- not sure if that is the case today! It was as understadedly chic as a giant bag could be, and it lasted forever. Congrats on acceptance/attendance!
