Dear all,

I gained so much knowledge from all of you so that I am quite sure that you will end my neverending search for a workhorse within a few posts... At least I hope!

I am desperately looking for a workhorse in black. Doesn't have to be leather, logo print shouldn't be, but would be ok if the other specs are met:
1.) it hast to be hughe. First I am 5'9 tall and more the weight-challenged type of person.
2.) It has to have feet
3.) it has to have a stiff buttom
4.) It has to be hughe---- I tend to carry my grocery shoppings, my half household, my books, my Laptop, my tablets (yes, plural) with it. I am teaching, which means that I have to schlepp tons of paper, electronic devices, sweets, drinks, handkerchiefs, ... you know what I mean.
5.) It has to be undestroyable, literally. First I do not baby my bags, second I am using public transport and ... well... it is as it is in Germany and Austria / Italy / Switzerland. (I am crossing borders on a regular basis, means once a week at least). So an under the radar bag would be better I gues than one screaming out "robbery could pay of".
6.) It might cost up to 5k but in this case it has to hold! I saw a few very disturbing videos about the Goyard bags and hell- NO!
7.) It has to be carried over the shoulder
8.) it musn't be too girly girly or too young for my age (42)
9.) I can carry whatever I want, but it should be high quaility. I am teaching at a center of excellence which means that even the youngest carry LV. (which is, in my case a total no go - I never want to carry the same bag as my pupils do).
10.) It has to be black...

So far I always used Longchamp I really liked as they were easy to carry and light, but actually I don't like me carrying Longchamp any more. Additional to that, the LC is a hughe mess if you won't use organizers (something I always plan to do but won't do). And: the edges wear of and develop quite pretty holes after a while of using. So, no Longchamp for me. Then, I hade the Mansur Gavriel bag, which I didn't like at all. It is sitting in my cupboard. Then I gad a few totes from Ralph Lauren that didn't hold well. The best workhorse I have is my Birkin (40 cm) but is is HUGHE and believe me it is that as heavy I tend to let it at home most of the times. My herbag becomes dirty very easily and has neither feet nor a stiff buttom and is really hard to get in, so I use it not very often.

I'd love to have a bag I could pass on to my daughter and that has a more classic look, so, pleasssse help me. I have literally no clue.

Thank you I know that you are the persons who will be able to help me!

Hmm tough criteria to meet! Would you consider an epi leather LV neverfull? The next bag I was going to suggest was a birkin, but I see you already have one that isn't working for your needs. Maybe a YSL Sac de jour in a larger size? It comes with a detachable shoulder strap. Chanel GST or Cerf tote meet most of the criteria I think, but maybe they're a bit flashy.

Dear ZoobaArbuba thank you for your reply!
In fact I considered the NF in epi leather but heard about serious quality issues (leather cracking and so on). So I stepped back.

Both Canels (the cerf and the GST) are two bags I was thinking about getting but my husband, who looked over my shoulder stalking the bags...said these weren't "me", so I am sort of confused. Actually I guess the real Hermès addict here is my husband, every bag I would show him would get an " too tacky" "noooo not pretty" "too much showing off" except Hermès. Nearly every Hermès bag passes the husband test. Unfortunately I have to pay for the bag so a second B - as much as I love to have one and sure I'll get one any day around my 100iest birthday...- so the bag has to be a) easy to get (means: go into a store, buy it and get out of the store) b) practicable and that is something the B isn't due to the weight and the way it is carried...
SdJ is on my list as well but it don't feel it. Actually my favorite is the GST ... The cerf is discontinued I thought? I like it a little better as the GST as it is larger and more "plain".

Is the Cerf discontinued? I haven't heard that before, I know my local Chanel had one in stock about a year ago, they kept it in the back and only brought it out when I specifically asked for it though. That's funny that your husband is more picky about your bag than you are :lol: Since you already know your Birkin is too heavy for your intended use, hermes is out. Aren't most of their bags known for being heavy? the hermes garden party may be an option (but I'm not sure about how stiff the base is and not sure if it has feet). Maybe try your luck at your local Chanel store (and maybe a few non-local ones since your job sends you to many countries) maybe you'll find the Cerf and see it in person to figure out if it's right for you. Good luck

Look at a Bottega Veneta

May I ask why the bag needs to have feet? I have a Bottega Veneta Cabat that is my workhorse. It holds everything and then some, is sturdy, handmade, but doesn't have feet which I personally have never missed and I abuse my bags.

I vote for a Mulberry Bayswater (the classic one), but as you are carrying so much stuff with you, I wonder if a black briefcase with messenger strap is the way to go for you.

Dear Zooaruba, I mixed it up. The Cerf is still available, the GST is discontinued... Most Hermés bags are quite heavy, yes:sad: I have the herbag that is not that as heavy but it develops pimples (yes) once the leather part becomes wet. Living in Europe we have a 50 % chance for rain most of the days..

I am going to Chanel next week and have a closer look at the Cerf! Thank you

If you're alright with contemporary, I'd check out the MCM Milla. If not, you may want to check out Valextra (Babila, Triennale), the Givenchy Horizon, or Prada Bibliothèque.

Dear llechiyong, the MCM Milla... well.... before MCM was shut down, the M stood for "Munich" which is the area I am living in. I had the perfums and the bags from them when I was younger - i.e. in my 20ies. Now after they were reanimated it feels wrong to buy them on several levels. Can't explain properly. I am quite sure that these bags will be the next must have bags to go, but for me that train left long ago...

Valextra makes amazing bags. I'd love to have a closer look at them but am not lucky finding a store in my area. Will have a look at them the next time I'll be in Italy.

Givenchy is the brand my mother carries so I want to step back on that. Prada- I had that on my list but ummmm... I don't know. Might have something to do with the fact that in my area Prada is the brand you have to carry if you want to show others your wealth and that is something I really don't like.. But I'll give it a touch and see!

Thank you for your suggestions, Valextra is on my list under the top 5!

I would suggest looking at Mulberry Bayswater Tote which could mee5 the brief or for really huge and versatile Mulberry Piccadilly - both amazing leather quality, understated and will last a lifetime.

Dear Jan70, amazing fact: I did not have Mulberry on my research list and - Halleluja- this is really an extremely pretty bag that immediatly went into the top 3. I really love it, it is clean, understated and it is not that as expensive. I'll check it out.
Thank you very much!

Dear twin-fun, that is easy to be answered: as I tend to put my bags onto the floor... During classes it has to stand on the floor, during trainrides it has to stand on the floor, during vet appointments it has to stand on the floor, at home it has to stand on the floor. So it needs feet otherwise it will lay down and the leather will get dirty.

I had a look at Bottega Veneta when I was in Italy, pretty bags, really amazing qualitiy, but the missing feet.... :(

Dear Ludmilla, I was thinking the same but.... I am really tall and I am really more male-dressed which means trousers, a blouse and a frock-coat (do you still say that?) so I am a little bis hessitant to ad another male element into my appearance.

Actually this would be me typical outfit except for the shoes:

I saw that you voted for the Mulberry as well, I really like that bag so far. Thank you!
